What is Happening In Room 16 Riverview STEM Academy Week of Sept. 9 th Reading In Reader's Workshop, we are reading Clark the Shark, which helps us continue to discuss how to behave at school. Clark wants to have fun at school, but he acts too rough and loud. So he remembers the rules by saying rhymes to remind himself how to act and he teaches them to the other new kids. We will work on predicting by reading the beginning of a story, then stopping halfway through to predict what we think will happen. We will also work on identifying certain characteristics of Clark. Language Arts This week, we introduce our first Benchmark unit, Rules At Home and School, . We will be discussing the essential question, "Why do we have rules? ". We started by reading a story called "Let's Play By the Rules" that told about how rules work in soccer. We compared and contrasted how a soccer team is alike and different from our classroom team. This topic fits in well at the beginning of the year when we are learning how to "Do School" all together. We have also been learning about rules in Social Studies as well! Science/Stem This week we focused on the sense vision. The students made water color pictures and mixed paints. Next week we will learn about apples. Math We have been working our way through Topic 14 Identifying and Describing Shapes; and took our first math test on Friday. We will introduce Topic 1: One to five; working our number sense muscles. Something to watch for at home as we work through this topic is that your child is forming their numbers correctly. Always starting at the top and write one continuous stroke for each number; only picking up their pencil on numbers that require it. . Reading Continued . .
