What is a Map? “A graphic representation, usually on a plane surface and at an established scale, of natural or artificial features on the surface of a part or the whole of the Earth…”

Topographic Maps A topographic map is a type of map characterized by largescale detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually using contour lines in modern mapping, but historically using a variety of methods. Traditional definitions require a topographic map to show both natural and man-made features. A topographic map is typically published as a map series, made up of two or more map sheets that combine to form the whole map. A contour line is a combination of two line segments that connect but do not intersect; these represent elevation on a topographic map.

Features of a Topographic Map A topographic map has several important features that will help you when locating something on it, otherwise known as BOLTS.

Title – Border – the title of the map should tell us something about the map. the edges of the map should be clearly shown. A common way to show the border is with a box around the edges of the map. Scale – Orientation – Direction must be shown on maps. This is done by placing a compass rose or a north arrow on the map It would be impossible to draw parts of the Earth to their actual size. Maps are therefore drawn to a smaller scale Legend – A legend may also be called a key. It is a list of all the symbols shown on the map.

Reading Topographic Maps You can use the Grids around the border to find location. EG – 23 / 89

Reading Topographic Maps Go ACROSS the park…. . Before you CLIMB the tree. And that is your 4 Figure Grid Reference. EG – 23 / 89

Your Turn! Find on your maps what is at the following grid reference. 42 / 83 40 / 80 42 / 79
