What is foreshortening? “Foreshortening is a way to render an object or figure that shows its depth. When we draw something that’s foreshortened, it’s basically an optical illusion that’s created because something looks compressed. ”

What is the effect of foreshortening? • “It is the visual effect or optical illusion that causes an object or distance to appear shorter than it actually is because it is angled toward the viewer. Additionally, an object is often not scaled evenly: a circle often appears as an ellipse and a square can appear as a trapezoid. ”

This is really a review of perspective drawing. Because it is exaggerated more often than not it is 3 point perspective, the birds eye view or the Worms view.

What this project entails: • The medium is your choice. The subject is your choice. The Style is your choice. • What is not choice is: • • It must be at least 12 by 18 or close to that measurement or larger depending on the paper used and the medium. The pge must be filled. It must show values, shadowing so we can determine where your light source is coming from. It must show the illusion of foreshortening, 3 point perspective in a way. You must do several planning sketches. These are to be outlines with out a lot of time spent on it. Just measure it out and outline it. You need to show this to me before you start so I can be sure you are on the right track. It may seem hard at first. It is meant to be. But in the end you will have acquired a real skill to use in future art projects. Many of my past art students have asked for this. They want to know how do you draw feet straight on. Look up on your phone for ideas if needed or check some of my many art books. This skill goes back to renaissance times. The David by Michelangelo was foreshortened. If you were to look at his feet and hands up front you would see their exaggerated size. This was done intentionally. It is a great skill to apply to any art to make emphasis. So of course your paragraph at the end will describe emphasis and how you did it in your art.
