What is each part of the brain used
What is each part of the brain used for?
What can we use our brains for? • Physical – Kicking a soccer ball • Emotional – Feeling happy to see your friends • Sensory – Hearing someone blow a whistle • Cognitive/Thinking – Controlling the desire to blurt something out
The Brain Parietal Lobe Cortex Frontal Lobe Temporal Lobe Occipital Lobe Cerebellum Brainstem
The Brain Don’t forget there are other structures located deep within the brain !
The left and right side of the brain look the same! Frontal lobe Parietal lobe Occipital lobe
Did you Know? ? ? L R • The left side (“hemisphere”) controls the right side of the body and • The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body
What part of the brain is affected? Person’s right half of the face can’t move Person can’t feel left foot
Now YOU are the Neuroscientists! Role Playing: Diagnose the patient! We will explore the roles of the major structures of the brain
Example Ask questions to find out what happened to the patient after their brain was injured: Some examples: 1. Can you tell me your name? 2. Can you walk in a straight line? 3. Can you read what is written on this paper?
Role playing Case #1
Role playing Case #1: Patient is blind - Injury to part of the occipital lobe “Cortical blindness”
Role playing Case #2
Role playing Case #2: Patient can’t hear, patient is deaf - Injury to part of the temporal lobe “Cortical deafness”
Role playing Case #3
Role playing Case #3: Patient is unable to speak - Injury to part of the Broca’s Area in the Left Frontal Lobe “Broca’s Aphasia”
Role playing Case #4
Role playing Case #4: Patient has trouble walking and controlling their balance - Injury to part of the cerebellum “Ataxia/Ataxic gait”
Role playing Case #5
Role playing Case #5: Patient is unable to write - Injury to part of the parietal lobe “Agraphia”
Summary! “Agraphia” “Cortical Blindness” “Broca’s Aphasia” “Cortical Deafness” “Ataxia”
What have we learned? 1. The brain can be divided into different regions: the cortex with 4 lobes, the cerebellum, and the brain stem. 2. Different activities require us to use different parts of our brain.
Don’t forget that the different parts of the brain we just explored are responsible for many other functions!
More patient cases!
Role playing Case #6
Role playing Case #6: Patient has trouble remembering names, facts and places. - Injury to part of the frontal and temporal lobes The capital of Canada is Ottawa 1+1 = 2 “Impaired semantic memory ”
Role playing Case #6: Patient has trouble remembering personal experiences, vacations, their first day of school. - Injury to part of the hippocampus “Impaired episodic memory ” The first time I rode a bike My vacation to Hawaii
Role playing Case #7
Role playing Case #7: Patient has trouble breathing and regulating breathing. - Injury to the brain stem “Impaired respiratory function”
Role playing Case #8
Role playing Case #8: Patient has trouble with attention and decision-making. - Injury to the frontal lobe “Impaired attention and executive function”
