What is Dual Enrollment Enrollment in both High
What is Dual Enrollment? • Enrollment in both High School & College at the same time • Earn College Credits that also count as Fannett-Metal Credits – Ex. A 3 credit English course would count as a 1 credit FM English course • Available to Juniors (1 class per semester) and Seniors (up to 4 classes per semester) – Must meet both FM and individual College criteria to participate – Two class periods (90 minutes total) can be provided for each College Class
What are the benefits of Dual Enrollment? Challenging Coursework • • Enhances transcript Prepares student for ‘College Level Work’ Weighted GPA Choose from course topics not offered at FM Works Towards College Degree • Many classes transfer to other institutions • Faster Post-Secondary degree after HS Cost • Several colleges will provide Dual Enrollment classes at a reduced rate for HS students Support & Flexibility • Access to FM staff for additional support • Most professors are accommodating and supportive to HS students • Access to HS/College Liaison for scheduling support
What are the challenges of Dual Enrollment? Challenging Coursework • More difficult than standard courses • Less direct instruction and individual support – (Individual accountability increases) Securing Useful Credits • Change in college plans – Credits may not be accepted • Wait Listing – What else to take? Cost • Can still be expensive (Consider class cost, fees, books, etc. ) Logistics • FERPA – More independent communication; student must be liaison between Institution & Parents, as well as between the Institution & High School • May not fit in schedule • May miss substantial time away from core subject • Ex. You may go a whole year without math • Inflexible Commitment: Unless you are a Career Tech student, you must take the same number of credits in both semesters to ensure a complete FM schedule • Depending on course load & location of classes, you may feel “disconnected” from FM opportunities. • Sometimes professors require on-campus testing or field trips
What can a student take? Juniors Seniors • 1 Class per Semester • 1 -4 Classes per Semester • Online classes only • “Usual” course load: – Semester 1: English 101 – Semester 2: – English Speech (FM Cohort) – Other online course, pending admin approval – If student did not take English 101 in Junior year, this is HIGHLY recommended (prerequisite for several courses) – Can take courses online or on college campus, pending FM admin approval & individual institution’s approval – Must be sure to meet all FM Grad Requirements Ø 1 Course: Attend FM full day Ø 2 -3 Courses: May be off campus half day Ø 4 Courses: May be off campus all day NOTE: Traditional students must take the same number of credits each semester to ensure a full schedule
