Every second, 23 bottles are sold in the World… • With 65 appellations, it is the largest AOC winegrowing region in France. 7 300 producers, 36 cave cooperatives and 300 houses of wine negociants. • The wines from Bordeaux invite to a table filled with food, the clink of the glasses before we start sipping, pleasure, happiness, elegance and simplicity. • Some history… • The history goes back to the gallo-roman era but it is during the Middle age that the Bordeaux vineyard starts to be an oenologic and commercial reference which it never stopped to be since then. • In 1552, when Aliénor, Duchesse d’Aquitaine marries Henri Plantagenet, future king of England from there the exportation start! • At the 17 th century, a new era of prosperity comes along with the appearance of new customers: The Dutch and new styles of wines. • At the 18 th century, it is the islands of America, Saint Domingue and the lesser Antilles ensures the growth of the exportations of Bordeaux wines. • Crisis and Prosperity. The oidium hits the vineyard in 1851 and we will not discover before 1857 that spraying sulfur in the vineyard could stop the disease. First 1855 Classification sees the day upon the demand of Napoleon III with the most renown crus from the left bank. Half a century before, Thomas Jefferson future president of the US had chosen these which would constitute one of the first cellars in the White House. • 1875 -1892: The Phylloxéra crisis. The introduction of american plants contaminated by insects will make almost the french vines disappear. The Bordeaux vineyard is saved by the grafting of french vines on Phylloxera resistant American rootstock. This « mushroom » will be controled by the Bouillie Bordelaise. • Birth of the AOC on November 14 th, 1936.
