What is a Title Sequence? Title Sequences A title sequence is the method by which films or television programmes present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound. What typical ingredients are in title sequences? The typical conventions of a title sequence will include the name of the director, producer, executive producer, actors and actresses, the production companies, the title of the movie, conceptual visuals and sounds such as, short clips or images to indicate what the movie may involve.

21 Jump Street The names of the cast, director, producers etc. However, no official movie title was seen but the song playing in the background matched the film, it built the connection between the word ‘jump’ and the title. The main characters were introduced with conceptual visuals like scenes and sounds, for example: short words/sentences from the script.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo The main characters were then introduced but with no further conceptual visuals like scenes or additional sounds Conceptual visuals were seen first, such as the flowing of ink. This has connotations of permanence and tattoos relating to the title of the film. Throughout the sequence we could see the names of the cast, director, producers etc. The title was shortly added afterwards, revealing the film as the conceptual visuals only gave a brief idea of what it could be about.

King Kong The main characters were not introduced and there weren’t many further conceptual

King Kong The main characters were not introduced and there weren’t many further conceptual visuals like scenes or additional sounds so it is quite dull and not as engaging. The names of the cast, director, producers are presented but all in one go and on one take. This is a quote taken from a Prophet, it makes the title sequence unique as there aren’t many used nowadays. It relates to the film as the ‘beast’ refers to King Kong so is therefore suitable.

There are common traits within these title sequences which help the audience recognise them

There are common traits within these title sequences which help the audience recognise them because when we see films or TV series the title sequences are almost expected as they help us understand gather some background information on what we’re about to watch. These may include, the official title of the movie, the names of the people involved in the production process and conceptual visuals/sounds. However, there are some differences between the sequences I chose, for example: King Kong’s title sequence included a quote, whereas the other sequences didn’t, this could show the evolution of title sequences through the years. Also, most of them had at least one conceptual visual/sound to reinforce certain parts but King Kong. This can help me with my production work because we can identify the strong and effective parts of different title sequences and embed them into our own. I can also see what works and what doesn’t, if it is engaging/attractive to the audience then it will make sense to ensure our work gives the same effect.
