What is a Republic? • It is a system in which citizens elect leaders to represent them. – Ex: The United States is a Republic because citizens elect members of congress (Senate and House of Representatives) to pass legislation in the federal government. • Does this make the US a Parliamentary Democracy?
Israel • Parliamentary Democracy – The Prime Minister organizes a coalition to govern. A coalition is a group of several different political parties that have to cooperate in order to make decision (coalition government) • Legislature known as the Knesset
Saudi Arabia • Absolute Monarchy – No formal constitution but has laws based on the Qur’an.
Iran • Theocracy – Government is run by religious leaders • Also a republic (it’s a mix between theocracy and republic) • Head of the Iranian government – Ayatollah, or recognized religious authority
India • Federal Republic with a Parliamentary Democracy – Legislative branch is a bicameral parliament • President – Head of State • Prime Minister – Head of Government
China • Communist – government controls all aspects of life • Legislative branch is unicameral – Consists only of the National People’s Congress (NPC) • President – Head of State • Premier – Head of Government
Japan • Constitutional Monarchy – Also has a parliamentary form of government • Emperor – Head of State • Prime Minister – Head of Government
