Greek Mythology Hero = Demigod A demigod was the offspring of a god and a mortal. *And the way Zeus got around, demigods were in no short supply.
Heroes needed to be extraordinary while still being relatable. Demigod Half god (extraordinary) + half human (relatable)
Beyond the Greeks A hero in the broader sense of the word is… Someone who stands out from ordinary individuals as one who embodies the values or ideals of a particular culture.
Since values and ideals of cultures differ from region to region and change through time, the concepts of what a hero is are not absolute.
Greeks Warrior culture. Heroes were based on physical accomplishments/ slaying of monsters.
Old English Period Warrior culture. Courage was valued. Beowulf
Medieval Age of chivalry; honor, loyalty. King Arthur
Renaissance Valued art, literature, the intellect. Da Vinci
Romantic Fascination with, wonder of supernatural. Dr. Frankenstein
American Literature Pioneering spirit, exploration, need for independence. Daniel Boone
Humanism, nationalism, and individual or family pride are three suggested reasons for the creation of hero myths. Humanism- the person is the center of all things, the entire universe. Nationalism- belief that a particular nation or culture is the best. Individual/family pride- belief that oneself or one’s family embody the best qualities.
