What is a habitat?
A habitat is… A place where species get what they need in order to survive: Food Water Cover Places to raise young These are the 4 basic elements of a habitat
What are some different types of habitats? Grasslands (savanna) Temperate forests Tropical rainforest Desert Polar ice (artic) Tide pools Oceans Freshwater … And many more!!
Habitats are found on land in water… Let’s explore some of the land habitats!
Grasslands (savanna) Grasslands develop wherever rainfall is not high enough to produce a forest nor light enough to form a desert.
Temperate Forest These forests accumulate a lot of precipitation, humidity, and contain a lot of deciduous and coniferous trees. They also go through all 4 seasons!
Tropical Rainforest They are very wet forests that receive heavy rainfall. They are also close to the equator and get a lot of sunlight.
Desert This habitat is very dry and hot. It get’s very little rain throughout the year. They are extremely hot during the day and very cold at night.
Polar Ice (Artic) A very cold and icy habitat. They Artic is in the north and Antarctica is in the south.
Now let’s learn a little about the different water habitats!
Ocean A large body of saltwater that covers most of Earth! All of the different ocean’s merge into one which creates the largest habitat on Earth.
Tide Pools These are rocky pools that are found just along the sea shore. They are filled with seawater that comes in and out of the pools with the high and low tides.
Freshwater These are places where the land is covered by shallow water: marshes, ponds, and the edges of large lakes and rivers.
