Feature Articles… • To discuss an issue of interest to the public. It can be of interest some time after it has been written.

TYPES OF FEATURE ARTICLES • HUMAN INTEREST – ISSUE BASED. • FOCUS ON A PERSON – NELSON MANDELA. • CURRENT AFFAIR – POLITICAL. • TRAVEL WRITING – FEATURE ON A PLACE OR EVENT.

AUDIENCE • THE AUDIENCE DETERMINES THE STYLE OF THE FEATURE ARTICLE. • IT DETERMINES THE LANGUAGE USED. • THE EXAMPLES SELECTED. • THE PHOTOGRAPHS OR VISUALS.

PURPOSE • INFORM – issue or event more than a news story. • PERSUADE – To present an opinion. • INSTRUCT – outline of How To • ENTERTAIN – amuse reader, mock a person or situation, gossip style.

CONTEXT/PURPOSE • CONTEXT • Articles arise from a particular event, an issue that is of interest to society. • They may explore a person of interest. • They may connect to a historical event, but this is still of significance. • Feature articles are topical to ensure they grab the interest of the audience.

Feature articles contain. . • • Eye catching headline Byline – writer’s name or source Interesting opening paragraph Subheading Personal Opinion Comments from others Anecdotes, or little stories

They do not just present the facts. They discuss an issue or an idea that can be developed further through a persuasive argument.

They include photos and pictures that entice the reader to START reading the article in the first place. They include a caption under every photo…. this further allows the author to manipulate the reader’s ideas on the issues.

• By making the reader part of the issue (writing in second person POV) you (the reader) are instantly involved in the issue. You feel that you have a responsibility to be a part of the ideas presented.

Certain parts of the text are enhanced to influence your reader and “blown up!” They are included in the headings or under the Photos.
