What is a data visualisation? • A way of representing data using images • The images communicate the message in the data to the viewer • Data visualisations can use bar charts, pie charts, line graphs and other statistical charts and tables to present the data • They can also use images related to the data being presented • Some people say data visualisation is a science, and others say it is an art • One such data ‘artist’ is Mona Chalabi

Creating a Data Visualisation • In the next few slides we will see some of Mona’s visualisations • For each one: • Can you identify the type of chart or graph Mona has used? • What is the message of the data visualisation? Has Mona used any other imagery? How is this imagery linked to the data topic in each case? What is the effect of the imagery? Do you think the visualisation communicates the message more effectively than a plain chart or graph? • Is it science or art? ! • •
