The Hippie Generation • Era from 1960 -1970 • Hippie is derived from “Hipster” – Used to describe beatniks who moved to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury commune for the Summer of Love in 1967
The Hippies • Most were White teenagers from wealthy middle class families • Rejected politics, embraced & Eastern Religions • Recreational Drug Users
• Relied Heavily on use of Rock & Roll – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – Purple Haze • Summer of 1967

Woodstock 1. Woodstock is the name of the town that the concert was originally suppose to be held in. 2. Organizers were kicked out of the original venue, so a farmer named Max offered his 600 acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York for $75, 000. 3. Organizers pre-sold 186, 000 tickets at $6 a day and then told Bethel authorities they were expecting 50, 000 people. 4. Five inches of rain in just three hours on the first day made the other three days a mudfest!
5. 32 performers put on one of the biggest rock shows of all time in front of 500, 000 fans. 6. An estimated one million people were turned back because of a nine mile traffic jam. 7. Nine out of ten concert goers smoked Marijuana. 8. 2 babies were born, three people were killed, one from heroin overdose, one from ruptured appendix and the last one accidentally got run over by a tractor. 9. Jimi Hendrix ended the weekend on Monday, August 18 th in the morning at 9: 00 am with his impromtue rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner.
