What is a booger? My scenario and lesson
Me: Good Morning class! How was everybody’s weekend? Students: raise their hand share how their weekend was Me: Did anybody get sick over the weekend? Student: Yes! I have a sore throat and runny nose!
Me: Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that! What happens when you have a runny nose? Student: Your eyes get watery and you have boogers in your nose! Class: ewwww!!!! Me: boogers? What is that?
Student: It’s green slimy stuff in the inside of your nose! Me: ohh and does anybody know what is the proper word for booger or snot? Student: Mucus! Me: Yes! Good job Natalie! And why is mucus in your nose? Class: I don’t know!! Me: Mucus as well as all the little hairs serve a very important job in our body! Class: Really? ? ? Me: Yes. Mucus protects your lungs. Can you show me where your lungs are?
Class: Points to their lungs. Me: When you breathe in dust, pollen, and all these other nasty stuff. If dust and pollen make it all the way to your lungs then you can get really sick and might not be able to breathe well. Class: ohhhhhh! And how do boogers help? Me: Well the snot and little hairs inside your nose trap all this dust and they move it towards the front of your nose. Then you have to sneeze or the snot gets annoying so you blow it out with a tissue. When you blow it out you are getting rid of all pollen and dust! Class: wow! I never knew that! Me: you see? ? You learn something everyday. Me: the little hairs inside your nose have a name…they are called cilia! Class: Everything has a name!! Me: yes indeed
Me: Today I am going to use powerpoint to teach you how to make fake snot! And we are actually going to make fake snot right here in this classroom. Class: How fun!!!
