Source 2 Public Health Act 1848 The government passed a Public Health Act to try and improve health in the towns. The Act did a number of things: – It raised taxes to help pay for improvements – It looked after sewers and the water supply – It set up a central board of health which would focus on improving living conditions (however it was poorly funded and staff were not well trained)

In the 1850 s the government raised £ 3 million to build a network of giant sewers that would carry waste across London. The waste would be pumped into the Themes away from where people lived and the Themes would carry it into the sea. These sewers are still used in London today!
