WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT EVOLUTION WHAT DO
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT EVOLUTION? WHAT DO WE NOT KNOW?
CHAPTER 8 CA RECORD OF EVOLUTION?
EVOLUTIONARY FAMILY TREES: THE PATH OF EVOLUTION • This is an evolutionary family tree – Shows the assumed progression of biological evolution
EVOLUTIONARY FAMILY TREES: THE PATH OF EVOLUTION • Scientists say fox is related to wolf – Tries to explain evolution – If they are close on the tree, they are “related” – Instead, say they share God-given characteristics
EVOLUTIONARY FAMILY TREES: THE PATH OF EVOLUTION • Evolutionary tree has limbs and branches – Common ancestor is an organism that gave rise to 2 or more different organisms – Evolutionists believe birds and reptiles have common ancestor • Evolutionists believe everything can go back to one common ancestor
EVOLUTIONARY FAMILY TREES: THE PATH OF EVOLUTION
MISSING LINKS • Missing link should be at branch, the “in-between” organism • Almost all common ancestors are missing links – Trees have more missing links than actual organisms
HOMOLOGOUS STRUCTURE • Some animals have things that are the same – Bones, organs, skeletons – Called homologous structures
HOMOLOGOUS STRUCTURE • Evolutionists: organisms that share homologous structures share common ancestor • Note: evolutionists say some structures aren’t necessary anymore, called vestigial structures
THE FOSSIL RECORD • Evolutionists think evolution is “recorded in stone” – Fossil record will show evolution • Bottom is oldest – Top is youngest • But not always true
FOSSIL DEPOSITS • Fossils in same rock layer died at some time – Fish dying together in stream – Dinosaurs dying together near water hole – Why?
WHY ARE FOSSILS IMPORTANT? • Fossils show when things lived • Some do not fit into current groups
WHY ARE FOSSILS IMPORTANT? • Evolutionists try to find missing links in fossils – Archaeopteryx: “early” bird
WHY ARE FOSSILS IMPORTANT? • But! – Can’t find complete series of fossil layers that support evolution – No credible examples of missing links – Some evidence supports idea that layers were laid down quickly (during same time period, points to flood)
SPECIATION • Speciation- forming of a new species • Usually stays same complexity – Does not gain genes – Only loses or moves them • Adaptations- changes that help something survive
CONCLUSION • Evolution, just like Creationism, must be accepted by faith
