Ideas from Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (1776) Adam Smith believed that laissez-faire economics--the free market (little or no government interference) and an unregulated exchange of goods and services would eventually be beneficial to everyone, not just the rich. He wrote that by producing more goods at lower prices they would be made more affordable to everyone. The growing economy would encourage capitalists to reinvest profits in new ventures. Adam Smith’s ideas became the foundation for capitalist ideology.

Ideas from Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’s Communist Manifesto (1848) Marx and Engels believed that the state needed to intervene in the new industrial society because of the inequities that had emerged. They acknowledged the new wealth that was being generated, but pointed out that it was benefiting only the rising middle class (bourgeoisie) while the workers (proletariat) were being exploited.
