There was a country called England
And America totally whipped their butts. Freedom baby!
With Lightsabers!
Sorry, wrong story. But Lightsabers ARE awesome.
Anyways… there was also an empire called China.
At this time, China was ruled by the foreign Qing dynasty, aka the Manchus.
Which is where we get the “Fu Manchu” from.
The Qing decided that all taxes would be paid in silver.
So Europeans began buying their goods with silver coins.
Over the years, China ended up getting a lot of silver.
Later, the British wanted to trade with China.
What products do you think the British wanted?
They wanted Chinese products like silk, tea and porcelain.
But the Chinese didn’t want any British products, like fur, wool or spices.
They thought these “red haired barbarians” had lame goods. Prince Harry (he’s a red-head, and sometimes he acts like a barbarian)
Besides, who likes poachers?
So the British were buying more from China than they were selling to China.
This made the British sad.
Until…they found something that the Chinese did want to buy.
Opium
It’s made from poppy seeds. (so if you’re going to take a drug test for a job, don’t eat poppy seed muffins for breakfast!)
Where did the British grow the opium?
The British grew it in their colony of India.
As time went on, China bought more and more. 1810 1830 5, 000……. 23, 000 chests
Analyze & HIPP the cartoon
Predict three effects of this.
1. Effect on Chinese people? 2. Effect on Chinese economy? 3. Chinese response? 4. What did this lead to? 5. What was the final outcome?
So…that’s the story of how the British got China addicted to drugs and then beat them up. THE END Thank you for a magical story time with Mr. Wooley
