What kind of muscle is the heart made of? Cardiac muscle. Right Atrium What is special about the cardiac muscle? It never gets tired! Right Ventricle Left Atrium Left Ventricle
Where does the deoxygenated blood enter first? The right atrium. From the right atrium where does the blood go? To the right ventricle. From the right ventricle where does the blood go? To the lungs. What happens to the blood in the lungs? It gets oxygenated.
From lungs where does the oxygenated blood go? To the left atrium. From left atrium where does the blood go? The left ventricle. From the left ventricle where does the blood go? Through Aorta the blood flows to the body.
• Carries needed substances to cells • Carries waste products away from cells • Fighting disease
There are 3 kinds of blood vessels: • Arteries – oxygenated blood flows through arteries • Veins – deoxygenated blood flows through veins • Capillaries - tiny blood vessels where substances are exchanged between blood cells and body cells
Blood pressure is the force against the walls of blood vessels when ventricles contract. What is the healthy blood pressure reading? 120/80 ml of mercury. What do we use to measure blood pressure? A sphygmomanometer.
Blood is made up of 4 components: • Plasma • Red blood cells • White blood cells • Platelets
Plasma is the liquid part of blood. It consists 90 % of water. It carries nutrients and it is yellow in colour.
Red blood cells take oxygen from lungs and carry it to the body cells. It is made of hemoglobin. The lifespan of red blood cells is 120 days. Every second about 2 million of red blood cells die.
White blood cells fight diseases. They are bigger than red blood cells and are fewer in number. They can live for several years.
Platelets are important in forming blood clots when there is a wound. They release chemicals that form fibrin that acts like a net.
There are 4 blood types: • A – can receive blood types A and O • B – can receive blood types B and O • AB – can receive blood types , A, B, AB and O • O – can receive only blood type O
The lymphatic system is a network of lymphatic vessels that carry lymph. The lymphatic system is important in fighting diseases. Lymph comes from blood and then returns back to the blood.
