� The research paper you write needs to reflect your insight. It should merely be supported by expert analysis. (Hint: You use your brain and the book to come up with insightful analysis. That’s it. ) � If you fail to annotate your selection well, the research process will not go well for you. You need to make your own assertions prior to reading experts’ in order to produce an original, insightful research paper.

SO HOW DO I START ANNOTATING? HERE ARE SOME POINTS TO FOCUS ON: � � � Defining difficult/unfamiliar words Background information necessary in order to understand the novel (i. e. customs, traditions, etc. ) Plot summary (This should move to analysis at some point though!) Text-to-self; text-to-text references (Compare what’s happening in the book to what you’ve personally experienced, or read in other literature. ) Literary Techniques (& the analysis of them!)-You should NOT highlight every metaphor but not be able to explain the significance of it within the work as a whole… � THEME � Character development � Setting � Style (tone, etc. ) � CONFLICT (man vs. man, self, or society) � Flashbacks, foreshadowing, rising action, climax, etc.
