Warm Up ◦ Place babies under heat lamp to heat them up after birth. Their body temperature is drastically changing from inside the mother to the outside world.
Clip Navel Cord ◦If not clipped, it can get stepped on and torn off resulting in injury or infection.
Clip Needle Teeth ◦ Two reasons ◦ More comfortable for sow when nursing ◦ Piglets could fight and needle teeth will cause injury.
Tail Docking ◦Other piglets will chew on tails if they are not docked while in the nursery.
Iron Injection ◦ 4 -5 days after birth, piglets run out of iron naturally in their body. Shots are quickest and easiest way to provide supplemental iron to piglets
Antibiotic Injection ◦Booster shot to ensure healthy piglets
Castration ◦Male Piglets ONLY ◦To prevent boar taint in meat
Ear Notching ◦Used for identification purposes
Check if Nursed ◦ Piglets need colostrum for warmth, energy and important antibodies from sow
Transfer (If Needed) ◦ If too many piglets for sow to nurse or one is being pushed back, transfer is necessary to ensure that piglet is getting enough to eat. This also can help reduce roll on rates.
