What are the factors that affect the reproduction, growth and development of living things?
� Plants and animals have developed adaptations that allow for reproduction �Plants use pollen to create new plants. Since plants cannot move from place to place, they rely on pollinators to carry the pollen from plant to plant �Plants use coloration, scent and other adaptations to attract pollinators, so reproduction is more likely to occur.
� Plants also have adapted ways to increase the chances of the survival and success of their offspring. � Seeds are adapted to be able to be spread to new locations away from the parent plant � Seeds are spread by wind, water, birds and animals
� Animals have also developed traits to allow for reproduction. � Traits like brightly colored feathers, poisonous eggs and mimicry give animals more of a chance to pass their traits along to offspring
� The environment will influence the growth and development of organisms � Organisms rely on both the biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem to help them grow and develop. � Changes to these factors can positively or negatively influence the growth and development of an organism.
� Abiotic factors: sunlight, temperature, precipitation, nitrogen levels, oxygen levels, space, etc. � Biotic Factors: size of the population, number of producers, etc.
� The growth and development of an organism is also influenced by the genetic makeup of the organism. � Genes are passed from parent to offspring. The physical appearance of the organism is determined by these genes.
� Organisms need to have the genes to show a given trait, but environmental factors can influence how those traits are expressed. � Example: a plant has the genes to grow tall, but the area it is growing in is suffering from a drought. This may cause the plant to not grow as tall � Example: Asthma in humans can be a result of genetics, but can also be caused by environmental factors like exposure to allergens
