Summative Assessment • Make an overall judgment of progress at end of defined period of instruction • Determines degree students mastered content standards • Often used for accountability • End of unit, grade, course or school year • Mastery

Formative Assessment • Classroom-based • Allows teachers to monitor student understanding • Adjust instructional practices • Integrated into daily instruction • Teachers and students receive feedback • Feedback to specific unit or lesson

Benchmark Assessment • Measure degree to which students have mastered a given concept or skill • Provide feedback to both teacher and student • Report how a student is progressing towards demonstrating proficiency on age and/or grade level standards • Likely aligned to set of standards

Diagnostic Assessment • • Used prior to instruction Determine a student’s strengths and/or needs Permit teacher to re-mediate student deficits Teachers can adjust instruction and curriculum to meet each pupil’s unique needs

CDTs are diagnostic assessments and the 4 Sight are benchmark assessments. Replacing 4 Sight with CDTs will not provide the same information.

The Classroom Diagnostic Tool is a set of online assessments, divided by content area, designed to provide diagnostic information in order to guide instruction and remediation.

The CDT assists educations in identifying student academic strengths, and areas in need of improvement.

The CDTs are designed to provide a picture or snapshot of how students are performing in relation to AA/EC for the PSSAs and/or Keystone Exams.

The CDTs are a computer adaptive test. The questions adapt to each student’s ability, depending on how he/she responds to each question. If a student answers a question correctly, the difficulty of subsequent questions increases.

Because the CDT is a diagnostic tool rather than an on-grade summative test, some of the more challenging questions presented are beyond the student’s current course or grade level.

How often should the CDTs be administered? Recommended number = 3 -5 times/school year My Suggestion – Do What Works!!

How much time is needed to administer the CDT? • CDT is untimed • Each student may receive up to 60 multiplechoice questions • Recommended time = 50 to 90 minutes • CDTs may be paused and continued

What should you tell your students about the CDTs? • The questions may be challenging. • Do not get frustrated if questions cannot be easily answers. • Do your best to answer the questions.
