What are Station activities? Station activities refer to a number of different activities and tasks called stations related to the topic and located at different desks in the classroom. First way: (students rotate and complete same worksheets) Each group of students has to rotate in order from one activity to the other within a specific amount of time so by the end of the lesson each individual student should finish all the activities on each station. Second way: (students don't rotate and complete different worksheets) Stations are different locations in the classroom where students work on different tasks in groups.
Why Station activities are useful? Learning these days should be differentiated to be effective and methodologies that are employed in the classroom should be varied to meet all individual needs. Differentiating instruction means create many ways so that students of different interests, abilities or learning needs have different and equally proper ways to understand develop the concept being taught. The challenge is to find the time to plan and prepare activities that meet the needs of all students and make them engage in their learning. Adding stations can be an effective way to meet the needs of students, to build the relationship with them and learn more about their weaknesses and strengths.
The Purpose of Station Activities • Learning Stations help students gain confidence and build self-esteem and encourage the shy ones to ask questions and discuss their answers. • Learning Stations allow students to work independently and in small groups. • Learning stations allow students develop time management skills. • Learning Stations help students develop problem-solving skills. • Learning Stations help build peer cooperation and peer support. • Learning stations reinforce “classroom skills”, such as taking turns, etc. Learning stations give the students a chance to move around, take measurements outside the classroom and use hand on activities. . Learning stations engage all students and minimise behavioural problems. • Learning Stations make learning and teaching FUN!!
