What are Simple Machines? 5 th Grade Science Chapter 13 Lesson 4
Objective(s): I Can… Understand the relationship between force and distance as it relates to simple machines (for example, levers and fulcrums working to lift objects). Essential Question: What are simple machines?
Prior Knowledge Can you remove a nail from a piece of wood using just your fingers? What if they used the claw of a hammer as a lever?
Purpose of Lesson Simple machines don't change the work that’s done, but they make work easier to do. You also want to discover how simple machines make work easier.
Quick Summary Machines change the direction or the amount of force required to do work. Simple machines have only a few parts. A pulley and a wheel and axle are two types of simple machines.
Scaffolded Questions (Part 1) What is a machine? How are a pulley and a wheel and axle alike and different? When a wheel and axle as well as a pulley make it easier to raise a bucket of water from a well, has the work changed? Why or why not?
Extend Vocabulary Make a word web with "Simple Machines" in the center circle and six satellite circles. Fill in each satellite circle with the name and description of a simple machine as they complete the lesson. Students can fill in pulley and wheel and axle from pages 426– 427.
