What are cells?
What are cells? Building blocks of living things Let’s name some living things: people, plants, animals, bacteria Cells provide structure, convert nutrients to energy, and carry out specialized functions. Your body is made of trillions of cells. Muscle cells help you move, stomach cells help you digest your lunch, and skin cells cover your whole body!

Transport How can stuff get in and out of cells? Passive Oxygen, carbon dioxide and water pass through tiny holes in the cell membrane from high concentration to lower concentration Called diffusion for gases, or osmosis for water Let’s explore diffusion! http: //www. biology 4 kids. com/files/cell 2_passivetran. html
Video Diffusion through a cell membrane Remember, an egg is a really big single cell! Click for a link to a tutori al! https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=r. Fls 3 g 8 v 6 fo
Transport How can stuff get in and out of cells? Active Larger molecules need help to pass through the cell membrane They can move one molecule at a time, or in bigger chunks Requires energy http: //www. biology 4 kids. com/files/cell 2_activetran. html http: //www. sophia. org/concepts/endocytosis-and-exocytos
Movement How can cells move? Some crawl (video 1 video 2) make new attachments at the front release attachments from the back contract cell body to bring cell forward Click f a link or to a video clip! Let’s explore how cells move by playing with toy water snakes! https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Jnl. ULOj. Uh. SQ http: //www. microscopyu. com/moviegallery/livecellimaging/mdb
Video How can cells move? Some swim (video 1 video 2) Cilia or flagella on cell body move back and forth or around like a propeller to produce movement Can you think of other ways cells might move? https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=HXc. Video Can you think of things other than cells that move in similar ways? Click f a link or to a video clip!
Let’s cell-ebrate what we’ve learned! We know… the parts of the cell how water and other materials move in and out of cells how cells move
