What are balanced & unbalanced Forces? ?
Unbalanced force(seesaw) Ø A seesaw can show balanced & unbalanced forces. Ø If the weight of 1 end of the seesaw is greater than the weight of the other end, the heavier end moves down. Ø If the weight on both ends are the same, the forces are balanced and the seesaw doesn’t move. 2
Net Force • Net force: is the combination of all the forces acting on an object. • You don’t need to know all the details of all the forces acting on an object to know how the object will move. • You just need to know the net force. • When the forces are balanced the net force= “zero”.
Net Force • When you watch 2 children trying to pull a toy in opposite direction. • If both pull with equal strength, their forces are balanced. • The net force is “ 0”, so its motion doesn’t change. • The net force on each child is also “ 0” so they stay where they are. • Sometimes the net force isn’t zero, forces are unbalanced and motion changes.
Net Force • A net force acting on a stationary object will move the object. • If all the forces acting on an object are in the same direction simply add the forces together
Net Force • Force acting in 1 direction is assigned a plus (+) sign. • Forces acting in the other direction get a minus (_). • Add the strengths of the forces to get the net force.
