Westward Movement • Americans wanted to expand to the West • Southerners wanted to expand slavery
Empresario System • Americans are invited to settle Texas • They have to pledge allegiance to Mexico, become citizens, and become Catholic. • By 1830 Americans outnumber native Mexicans • Disagreements will arise over slavery, religion and language
Causes of the Texas Revolution • Racism- Both sides feel that they are better than one another • Cultural Differences- The whites that moved in refused to follow the rules that the Mexicans laid out. • Slavery- Slavery was illegal in Mexico, but whites brought them in anyway.

San Jacinto • Last battle of the Texas Revolution • Fighting lasted 20 minutes but slaughter continues until evening over 630 Mexicans killed • Massacre is revenge driven for the Alamo and Goliad
Sam Houston • Commander of Texan army who defeats Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto • First President of the Republic of Texas
Texas Becomes It’s Own Country • Texas argues that Rio Grande is boundary but Mexico argues that it is the Nueces River • This will come back and haunt both countries
