- The Far West ► In addition to Americans moving west to Texas. Santa Fe was settled for trade purposes. ► Mountain Men also came to the far west for commercial reasons. ► The fur trade boomed during the early 1800’s

► Oregon Country § In 1813 American newspapers publicized fur trappers route to Oregon Country. § This route became known as the Oregon Trail

§ As more U. S. settlers moved to Oregon Country, the status of the territory became a hot political issue. § Great Britain and the U. S. had jointly occupied Oregon Country since 1818. § James K. Polk stunned angered the British by proclaiming America’s right to all of Oregon Country below the 54˚ 40’ parallel. § His slogan, “Fifty-four forty or fight” stirred intense negotiations in which the U. S. ended up extending it’s border to the 49 th parallel.

► The Oregon Trail § Traveling the trail was a difficult journey requiring group cooperation § The trip took about six months in harsh conditions § Not all trips ended well, like the Donner Party

§ Although settlers feared the possibility of attack, American Indians often helped pioneers on the overland trails ►They acted as guides ►Carried messages between wagon trains ►Sold wild game to travelers

► The Mormon Trail § As farmers and missionaries moved to Oregon § Thousands of Mormons moved to the Mexican territory of Utah, led by Brigham Young. § They left due to Religious persecution § By 1860 more than 40, 000 lived in Utah mostly in the Salt Lake valley
