Western Maryland Stags Offensive Playbook Offensive Philosophy A
Western Maryland Stags Offensive Playbook
Offensive Philosophy A. This is a no huddle offense, all plays will come from the sideline on whiteboard the middle number is the play we will be using that is on the arm band of the QB. Example the whiteboard says 145 he looks at his arm band for the number 4 play B. As soon as the ref picks up the ball from the previous play everyone has to be on the line and looking to the sideline. This offense should be able to get off a play in less then 10 sec C. C. Our goal is wear out the defense with running and passing plays equally, but giving them no chance to sub out. Are goal is for 60 offensive plays per game. D. We shall dominate the defense and not the other way around. E. We will be disciplined as a team and work as one unit. F. We will be mentally and physically prepared for each and every practice and game. G. As coaches we will have you ready for each and every game and as players you will be prepared to give us 110 percent every practice and every game. H. Score as many points as possible and have fun enjoying your passion!
QB Pre Snap Alignment • QB Aligns at 4. 5 yards from the center • Feet are slightly staggered with throwing foot slightly in front • Hands are comfortable, with fingers spread • QB brings the snap through the third hand • QB Snaps Eyes to Read
Running Back Alignment • RB Lines Up 1 Yard Behind QB, With his crotch splitting the OS leg of the guards in the King and Queen alignment. • His eyes are straight ahead. • He is balanced, with his hands on his hips • If his hands go to his knees, he goes to the bench pattern • We have some flexibility to his alignment
Snap of the ball will be a hand clap! Why are we doing a hand clap for the snap? By doing this we eliminate false starts and everyone can concentrate on the job they are to do. No more looking in at the ball that can cause false starts by anticipating the count and no more false steps from the LOS and lost time for WR to get off of the LOS. Also the only time you will hear words from the QB is when he audible’s then he will holler out either a State, which means a run audible is coming, or he will holler out a City alerting you to a pass audible. Example: we called a Pistol King 26 power, but the QB sees that they have stacked the outside and left the middle open his audible will be Delaware 1 which means that the play is a dive play in the 1 hole which is to the left of the center instead of a power run. If he called out San Diego that means all receivers are going to run slants and that it is hot pass. Also the center will now holler out the new blocking scheme. This is going to eliminate plays that cant be productive because the defense is stacked to where the play is going and it also goes back to our philosophy that we are going to dominate the defense and not the other way around!
Communication Whiteboard, audibles, and hand signals
Play Calling The players need to read the middle numbers and then look on the wristband to find the play. DOES can print any numbers they want around the actual numbers that we will be using. Below is an example of the play call with the middle number being the play call for both the skill and the O line that will be on their wristbands. R 6807 OU 547
Audibles Are audibles will be using cities and can be called out of any formation. We will be using 3 passing plays and 4 runs to give us versatility against any front the defense shows us. The following pages the audibles being called out of the Twins formation. All of these audibles can be called out of any formation at any given time. You will here following sequence when an Audible is called and may sound something like this. Kill, Kill Carson 33 33 that lets everyone know that now we are going with all curl routes and the blocking assignment is the Ocean blocking scheme The run audibles will be using States and military alphabet for the direction Oklahoma – Sweep Outside South Dakota - Power South Carolina – Slam Delaware – Dive Romeo – Right Lima – Left Carson -5 -6 yard curl routes San Diego – Slants Houston – hitch routes 5 -4 come back to the QB Denver – 5 yard dig/in for Left Side, and 10 yard dig/in routes for right side. Buffalo – Very special Audible because if the CB is sitting way off our receivers then the QB will have the option to call this on his own on a signal from the sideline alerting him to the call. This is a quick bubble screen to the X H Y or Z receivers depending on the formation.

Offensive Line Blocking rules
We always start out in our Pistol formation. WR will always be 1 -2 yards off the LOS unless the formation calls for otherwise. Example H goes in motion then X will move down to the LOS to cover the LT. Also we read our WR from left to right so all pass plays like Trips right 8321 would mean x would run a skinny post Y would run an out H would run an in and z would run a dig. Gap is 2. 5” 5 yards from sideline H L T L G C R G R T Hash mark or 1 yard inside the hash Y Z X 4. 5 – 5 yards Q B 1. 5 -2 yds. R
Inside Zone Read Rules • Center: Must Establish The Ohio (Ohio is our term for the 0) The Center Has playside Gap to 0 • Guards: Playside Gap #1 • Tackles: Playside Gap #2 • TE: Playside Gap #3 • The key is the Center MUST establish and communicate who the OHIO is.

Offensive Lineman Alignment and Terminology The helmet should be on the center of the Centers back and spacing should be 2. 5” apart. We will be at a ready stance when coming to the line after all the signals have been called in you will make your reads and coordinate with each other. Communication is Vital for this line to work efficiently as one unit! After you make your reads and know your assignment you will go into a 3 point stance. Do not move until you hear the clap of the hand! Terminology you must know Lake – Slide protection to the left. River – Slide protection to the Right. Ocean – Pass protection wedge hip to hip. Lion - Roll out protection to the left. Rabbit– Roll out protection to the Right. Tiger- double team block between the RT and TE. Called for Power and sweeps outside to seal the edge. Gorilla- double team between the RG and RT. Called for Slam. Cheetah – double team between the Center and RG called for Right Dives. Condor- double team between the Center and LG called for Left Dive. Goose- double team between the LG and LT called for Left Slam. Thrasher – double team between the LT and the TE/FB. Offensive lineman stances Offensive lineman will line the with their helmet in the center of the Centers back and will stand in a zone offensive setting. The following picture below shows how I want you to stand we will always be in a three point stance. We are going to show you how we want you set up and once you are setup this way you will not leave that stance unless a coach tells you to line up differently. We doing zone blocking and that means that we will dictate to the defense where we are attacking and how we are attacking. You Hawgs are my Road graders making a road for my R back and QB! Even when pass defending we will be using the same stance. Here is an example of zone passing scheme.
Defining Zones
Defining Inside and Outside Zones
Dealing With Stunts F C R W E M T S T C E • When the defensive line stunts, our lineman must understand their first responsibility is playside gap • They must have their heads up and eyes open • TB and QB Utilize Backside Mesh Footwork
Handling Stunts B B L E This is a two-on-two drill working two offensive lineman vs. a defensive lineman and a backer. This is a generic drill where we will put guards with tackles and centers with guards. We want this to be a game speed drill once the initial teaching is done. You must work against twists and loops B T T E This is our three on three drill we do a lot because of stacked fronts. We get head up tackles that will slant. We work this drill with the front side, then the backside. We get our eyes up and this teaches the everyone to be able to work an inside threat. We teach patience in this drill and we follow a very strict rule, “Don’t Chase Backers. ”
Our HIPPO Concept • We also use zone combinations with our lineman getting hip to hip • Offensive Linemen will drive the defensive lineman into the linebacker • The direction the linebacker goes will determine which lineman accounts for the backer • Our landmark is the near ear/near number of the down defender • We teach the offensive lineman to get four eyes to backer
Teaching a Near Ear Vertical Push • Offensive lineman will take a flat step to the near number • On the flat step the offensive lineman will cock their hands • The second step is a vertical step and punch the near number of the down defender • We call this Flat Step, L Step • We drive the down guy into the linebacker • We DO NOT chase backers
Near Ear Vertical Push (Take/Overtake) B B T G T T The linebacker attacks the guard’s gap, so the guard takes the backer and the tackle overtakes the down defender. G T The linebacker attacks the tackle’s gap, so the tackle takes the backer and the guard overtakes the down defender.
Twins Queen Counter Read R W E M T S T E Vs a 3 -5 to the call side we will kick out the 5 tech with the BSG, and the BST will lead through. We assign two players to the PSLB. Our FSG takes the blitz away and the Y inside releases and looks to seal the Mac. The PSG will NOT chase the Mac. We can also have # 2 block the OSLB and have the pull lead through account for Mac to FS
Core Running plays Bread and butter running plays
Run Plays Are run plays are pretty simple and below are the terminology we will be using for them. Memorize these terms and get to understand how they work and the blocking schemes involved. I have included a couple of plays as examples so study those and you will see how are Zone blocking scheme works for all formations that we will run out of. Run Terminology Sweeps are always to the outside of the formation this would be the 7 th gap and the 8 th gap Power is always between the 5 th and 6 th gap. Slam is between the 3 rd and 4 th Gap and Dive is the 1 and 2 gaps and is always between the guards.
