Irish Potato Famine The Irish Potato Famine was the worst famine to occur in Europe in the 19 th century. A consequence of the famine, Ireland’s population of almost 8. 4 million in 1844 had fallen to 6. 6 million by 1851. About one million people died from starvation and other famine-related diseases. The number of Irish who emigrated during the famine may have reached two million. Ireland’s population continued to decline in the following decades because of overseas emigration and lower birth rates. By the time Ireland achieved independence in 1921, its population was barely half of what it had been in the early 1840 s. https: //youtu. be/Di. EQ 4 ZAB 5 NA

Newspaper Headline Explain? 9. Migrants in Europe Are Using Power in Numbers to Chunnel Their Way to the UK https: //www. youtube. com/w atch? v=h 0 Zp. TZJps. Zs Europe’s overall migration numbers have dramatically increased this year as well, but many of those looking to enter England are doing so because they’ve already made it from as far away as Greece or Italy into France, and have family members they plan to meet in the U. K. Migrants camping out in Calais, France have a risky new plan for getting into the United Kingdom: storming the Channel tunnel in massive groups and hoping for the best. Thousands of migrants jumped onto the backs of trucks and trains in desperate attempts to cross the border into England from Calais, where they had been staying in squalid makeshift encampments near the underwater “chunnel” that connects the two countries.
Aging European Population https: //youtu. be/Y 5 Vou Mgsq. O 8 10. What problems will come from an aging population? 11. What will Europeans have to plan for in the future? • 10. W. Europeans are not having enough kids to replace population, • 11. shortage of workers in the future and Europeans will need to plan for ways to fill those jobs
W. Europe Lecture Notes Polders- In The Netherlands, the land is at or below sea level, the people created earthen dykes (walls) to keep out water and used windmills to pump the water away. They reclaimed the land from the sea. Irish Potato Famine- 1840’s, potato crop in Ireland was plagued with disease, people died and millions emigrated to other countries, including US. Chunnel- Underwater tunnel that connects France to England. Aging European Population- W. Europeans are not having enough kids to replace population, shortage of workers in the future.

Population Pyramid Analysis
Rapid Growth- younger population vastly outnumbers the older population Negative Growth- older population outnumbers the younger population Zero Growth- older and younger population are basically equal Slow Growth- younger population is slightly higher than older population
