West Virginia University Student Teaching Observation and Evaluation
West Virginia University Student Teaching Observation and Evaluation Overview Clinical Experience
WVU has adopted the Danielson Framework as their evaluation tool for clinical experiences. This is a review of the implementation of these tools during your experience with WVU students completing their clinical placement. Please contact Jo. Dee Decker, Field and Clinical Experience Coordinator, with any questions.
Danielson Framework Overview The Danielson Framework consists of six Clusters that the teacher candidates will be evaluated on during their time in the classroom. Here is a list of the Clusters: Framework for Teaching Cluster 1: Clarity & Accuracy Framework for Teaching Cluster 2: Learning Environment Framework for Teaching Cluster 3: Classroom Management Framework for Teaching Cluster 4: Intellectual Engagement Framework for Teaching Cluster 5: Successful Learning Framework for Teaching Cluster 6: Professionalism Each of these clusters will be evaluated for teacher candidates by the mentor teacher and university supervisor at midterm and finals.
Danielson Framework Overview Each teacher candidate will be evaluated using the evidence you collect through observations once at mid-term to provide time for improvement and reflection and once for the final time in collaboration with the university supervisor using the document included in the pictured on this slide. The mid-term will be used as evidence for the teacher candidate to focus on improving their skills for the remainder of the semester. The evaluation provides detailed information for areas of focused improvement during the final weeks in the placement. The focus of each observation will be explained in a little later in this presentation.
Danielson Framework Overview The final evaluation will be completed in a collaborative effort between the mentor teacher and university supervisor. The evaluation will be used as a component to determine successful completion of the clinical placement.
Observation Overview- Mentor Teacher Mentor teachers are the main point of contact with teacher candidates. During the candidate's time in the classroom, mentor teachers will be observing the candidates to gather evidence to support a final rating on the evaluation rubric. Mentor teachers will receive the forms on the next several slides to complete the observations. Prior to completing an observation, the candidate will complete a lesson plan and hold a brief pre-conference with the mentor teacher to provide an overview of the lesson preparing to be taught. During the teaching of the lesson, the mentor teacher will utilize the Collaborative Teaching and Learning Quick Notes form. This form assists the mentor teacher in the collection of the evidence caught during the lesson. Following the lesson, the mentor teacher and the teacher candidate will hold a post conference to reflect on the lesson and may use the Learning Log to narrow the focus for improvement for the next lesson. This cycle will be completed for each cluster.
Danielson Framework Overview- Cluster 1 Mentor teachers and university supervisors will use this form when observing and collecting evidence for Cluster 1.
Danielson Framework Overview- Cluster 2 Mentor teachers and university supervisors will use this form when observing and collecting evidence for Cluster 2.
Danielson Framework Overview- Cluster 3 Mentor teachers and university supervisors will use this form when observing and collecting evidence for Cluster 3.
Danielson Framework Overview- Cluster 4 Mentor teachers and university supervisors will use this form when observing and collecting evidence for Cluster 4.
Danielson Framework Overview- Cluster 5 Mentor teachers and university supervisors will use this form when observing and collecting evidence for Cluster 5.
Danielson Framework Overview- Cluster 6 Mentor teachers and university supervisors will use this form when observing and collecting evidence for Cluster 6.
Observation Process Overview Following each observation and post-conference should be held. This form can be used to identify area of focus and next meeting dates.
Evaluation Process Overview These observation forms will act as the evidence you use to complete the mid -term and final evaluations. Mentor teachers and university supervisors will utilize these forms while completing observations to collect evidence to support identified areas of success and areas in need of improvement. Mentor teachers and university supervisors will review the observation forms with teacher candidates to allow them to self-reflect and identify areas of focus.
Evaluation Process Overview WVU has 12 different teacher preparation programs. Each Teacher Preparation Program may have different time requirements for clinical experiences. The next few slides will provide you sample timelines to follow based on possible clinical set-ups.
