Bias Initiative Synergy has embarked on a journey of learning about bias in an effort to help us disrupt our own biases and the biases of others (which are always easier to identify than our own ). Our Journey Cont'd. Why do we care about bias? The WHY is captured nicely in this short video: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=dlwkv. B 0 Diz 4 Biases are non-conscious drivers that affect how we see the world and how we make decisions. Bias is helpful and it can blind us to new information. Bias factors into everyday activities and decisions we make. When we are asked to think about how we work differently, in a market where disruption is the new norm, learning how to identify and challenge our own biases can open doors to new ideas, insights, better decisions.
Bias Initiative Cont'd. The first step was a very simple introduction to some web-based learning, consisting of online modules and pod-casts, from the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion. This program lead us into DECIDE: The Neuroscience of Breaking Bias, through NLI (Neuro. Leadership Institute). The NLI approach to bias helps build habits to engage in a new set of behaviors that reduce bias. We all make decisions in our daily work, provide advice in our daily work, and each of those are opportunities to improve and innovate.

Learning Culture Synergy has been focusing on a shift from a training culture to a learning culture. Training Vs Learning
To foster learning, we have adapted the 70 – 20 -10 rule. 70% of learning is on the job 20% is through relationship learning like peer to peer, coach to peer, and mentorship – etc. 10% is more formal in classroom type training. Learning Culture We have also started to share the concept of learn 1 do 1 teach 1 Learn 1 – Learn how to do something yourself (by way of using resources available to you) Do 1 – Use what you have learned to complete the task/activity Teach 1 – Transfer your knowledge to someone else Teaching is the best way to re-inforce and confirm your own learning
What's Ahead? Never take wellness for granted or become complacent Wellness will continue to be a focus
Sustainment activities We asked leaders to include the bias content in their team meetings and coaching sessions. Participants were asked to complete two surveys after the bias program ended (Participant and Direct Report) - Accountability Follow-up about the program within one-on-ones and team meetings Sustainment Share any methods we come up with to keep the concepts fresh (quizzes, etc. ) Participate in the conversations on Yammer Talk about the insights we’ve gained from our participation – tell our story Assist with embedding by revisiting principles when we see opportunities – in ourselves and others.
