American Pharmacists Association JAPh. A – WBI Published Research (e. Published 6/26/20) Ability of the Well-being Index to identify pharmacists in distress Data used in the research was collected during the validation study of the pharmacy WBI that was conducted in Fall 2019. Responses to WBI questions and demographics from 2200 were used. Conclusion (from article) The WBI effectively stratified well-being and multiple dimensions of distress in pharmacists, including low QOL, extreme fatigue, and burnout. Pharmacists with at-risk scores were also found to have increased likelihood of adverse professional consequences. These findings suggest that the WBI can serve as a useful tool to measure well-being and identify distress in pharmacists. Further research exploring contributing factors and implications, as well as individual-, organization-, and system-level interventions to promote well-being among pharmacy professionals, is needed. https: //www. japha. org/article/S 1544 -3191(20)30281 -8/fulltext

American Pharmacists Association Sample Verbatim Responses Hold big chains accountable for the terrible treatment of their employees. I have terrible anxiety every day. I used to love my job. Now it’s the biggest cause of my depression. I’ve contemplated suicide the past few months because of how terrible working conditions have been. I’m trying to provide the best care for my patients, but I am not given adequate tools to do so. I’m worried every day that I’m going to make a mistake and hurt someone. I, of course, am as diligent of a pharmacist as I can be, but I am only human and the likelihood that I (or another pharmacist) will make a mistake has increased tremendously. It’s hard to be as thorough as one would like when you’re the only person working in the pharmacy and you have 10+ angry and impatient people staring at you and yelling for you to go faster. Especially when your “success” according to metrics set from corporate is based on the surveys and opinions of these same people. Raise awareness about potential for serious errors from unsafe working conditions, following time quotas Work with the boards of pharmacy across the country to ensure pharmacist conditions are fair and safe (i. e. breaks and staffing, quality of work versus quantity) by implementing and/or enforcing rules and regulations. The resources needed to improve well-being are time (particularly time where you are not overworked, overwhelmed, and can actually feel like you have a grasp of the workflow) and job security. No program, counseling, mental health program, etc. is going to replace or alleviate the time you spend buried up to your neck in insurance issues, unobtainable corporate goals, or lost time at home where you're too burnt out to give your spouse or children the time and attention they deserve. Mental health resources and activities. Course on conflict and anger management, overcoming fear, and create a safe form for pharmacists to connect and exchange ideas and vent frustrations without fear of retaliation from employers Routinely ask pharmacists if their error rate has increased due to longer hours/less staff per shift.
