Math Who is Mrs. Alford? ● I’ve been teaching for 12 years - this is my 4 thyear as a 6 th grade math teacher -before teaching I was an architect for over 20 years. ● I love math and I want to instill a love of math in your child ● I believe all students can learn math - we are working on our math mindset this year and learning to persevere. ● I love your children and I want to do what is best for them. Math New math program for 6 th grade - Open Up Resources, hands on, focused on discovery and discussion of mathematical ideas Dividing fractions, decimals, factors and multiples Ratios and Unit Rates, relationship of fractions, decimals and percents Negative numbers and the coordinate plane Beginning of Algebra - learning the rules and working with expressions Geometry - area of polygons, nets and surface area of three dimensional prisms, and volume ● Introduction to Statistics - gathering data and graphing results, identifying center and range measures. ● ● ●

Language Arts Who is Ms. Volm ● I am in my 2 nd year of teaching in a school setting. This is my first year teaching sixth grade. ● My goal is to help all students grow in their reading/writing skills, while also helping them grow in their love for ELA. ● I incorporate partner and group work almost daily to get students involved in learning with each other. I love to incorporate activities and technology to engage students even further into what we’re learning.

Language Arts Curriculum ● Collections is new to sixth graders. ● It consists of a textbook, close reader, and writing guide. ● They are composed of high interest stories and writing prompts. ● First semester writing focus: narratives and informatives ● Students are expected to write a five paragraph essay in response to a prompt. ● We will also read 1 -2 full length novels this year. Science: ● Unit 1: Weather and Water ○ Social Studies: Big Ideas: Scientific Method, Air Pressure, Water Cycle, Natural Disasters, Layers of the Atmosphere ● Themes of Geography ● Units of Timelines ● Ancient Civilizations ○ ● Unit 2: Diversity of Life ○ Big Ideas: Cell Types, Organelles, Microscopes, Understanding the Human Body First Humans, Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, India, Greece, Rome, Americas ● World Religions Unit, Enlightenment, Renaissance (if time permits) We will have lots of projects, independent and group, to be completed at school and at home!

Test Retakes Retake Policy: Students will be permitted to retake a test within one

Test Retakes Retake Policy: Students will be permitted to retake a test within one week of receiving the original graded test back (Scores of 92% or lower are eligible for retakes). In order to prepare for the retake, students must complete a Retake Contract outlining the requirements for the student to further practice skills and earn a retake. The additional activities required will vary by subject area/teacher. After students retake the test, if the grade is higher the higher grade will replace the original grade (DVUSD policy).

Retakes cont’d. Retakes need to be completed within one week of receiving your grade. Assessments will be done on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7: 45 am. (Extra creditand grading on a curve are not used; these practices are not an effective way to show mastery of standards. )
