Beware of: The Yeast of the Pharisees

Mark 8: 11 -21

“The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven.

He sighed deeply and said, ‘Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it. ’

Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.

‘Be careful, ’ Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod. ’

They discussed this with one another and said, ‘It is because we have no bread. ’

Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?

Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember?

When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up? " ‘Twelve, ’ they replied

‘And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up? ’ They answered, ‘Seven. ’

He said to them, ‘Do you still not understand? ’”

Jesus said Beware!

‘Be careful, ’ Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod. ’

A little yeast slowly ferments a whole lump of dough! (Insidious)

Jesus was speaking Figuratively!!!

The religious & civil leaders of Jesus’ day were seeking specific signs. (Unbelief, greed, fear)

Likewise A little unbelief, greed, fear goes a long way! (We’re not talking about doubt)

Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness,

but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth. ”

A little yeast goes a long way!

Unfortunately Not much has Changed!!!

Many people still seek: Signs Feelings Experiences Proofs

Example: When praying, are we primarily bringing a list of needs/desires or are we simply seeking the Lord?

Clarification: It is NOT wrong to ask the Lord for His blessings, healings, help, etc.

Yet at times, Believers treat the Lord as a type of Santa Claus

Just like us Jesus’ Disciples were “slow on the uptake”

What are we primarily seeking?

Psalm 46: 10

“Be still and Know that I am God…”

May I suggest going to “where the air is thin”.

Quieting our heart

Waiting in God’s presence

Jeremiah 29: 13

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. ”
