CALL TO REFLECTION PRELUDE: He Who Began a Good Work in You arr. Mark Hayes
What is the use of running when we are on the wrong road? Bavarian Proverb
The shortest way is not always right, nor the smoothest nor the safest. Therefore, don’t be surprised if the Lord chooses the farthest and roughest, but be sure of this - the Lord will choose the best. Anonymous
The wise person in the storm prays to God, not for safety from danger, but deliverance from fear. It is storm within that endangers, not the storm without. Ralph Waldo Emerson
The secret of being wrong isn’t to avoid being wrong! The secret is being willing to be wrong. The secret is realizing that wrong isn’t fatal. Seth Godin, Tribes
Failure is an event, never a person. William D. Brown
When I fail, as I must, I can only recall the desert monk who told his disciple, “Brother, the monastic life is this: I rise up, and I fall down; I rise up and I fall down. ” Kathleen Norris, Acedia and Me
It is a common mistake to think of failure as an enemy of success. Failure is a teacher – a harsh one, but the best. Thomas Watson Sr. , Founder of IBM
God knows it is emotionally satisfying to be righteous with that righteousness that nourishes itself in the blood of sinners. But God also knows that what is emotionally satisfying can also be spiritually devastating. William Sloan Coffin
Since the church finds its life in Christ, he is at its center, and a church defined by its center doesn’t have to worry about the boundaries. M. Craig Barnes, Searching For Home
People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other. Martin Luther King Jr.
PRAYER OF TRANSFORMATION
* HYMN Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah #281 in the Blue Hymnal
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more.
Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through; Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, Be Thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death, and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side; Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee.
PRAYER OF FORGIVENESS – (IN UNISON) Michael Leunig, b. 1945, Australian poet and cartoonist
God help us to find our confession; the truth within us which is hidden from our mind; the beauty or the ugliness we see elsewhere but never in ourselves; the stowaway which has been smuggled into the dark side of the heart, which puts the heart off balance and causes it pain, which wearies and confuses us,
which tips us in false directions and inclines us to destruction, the load which is not carried squarely because it is carried in ignorance. God helps us to find our confession. Help us across the boundary of our understanding. Lead us into the darkness that we may find what lies concealed;
that we may confess it towards the light; that we may carry our truth in the center of our heart; that we may carry our cross wisely and bring harmony into our life and our world. In the name of Jesus who is the truth we pray. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING— Jonah 1: 1 -17 (Old Testament, Page 859 in pew Bible)
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, “Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me. ” But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.
But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up.
Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down, and was fast asleep.
The captain came and said to him, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish. ”
The sailors said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us. ” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “Tell us why this calamity has come upon us.
What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you? ” “I am a Hebrew, ” he replied. “I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. ”
Then the men were even more afraid, and said to him, “What is that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them so.
Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us? ” For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you;
for I know it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you. ” Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, O LORD, we pray, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life. Do not make us guilty of innocent blood; for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you. ”
So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. Then the men feared the LORD even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows.
But the LORD provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
* This We Believe (in unison) Proverbs 3: 5 -6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
HYMN Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing # 356 in the Blue Hymnals
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above; Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, Mount of God's unchanging love!.
Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by Thy help I'm come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor Daily I'm constrained to be! Let that grace now, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee: Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.
The Prayers of the People
Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in his wonderful face And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of his glory and grace.
The Lord’s Prayer (Debtors version)
Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory. Amen.
Response Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me; Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

* The Response of Praise — DOXOLOGY ( #593) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below; Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.
Offering of Prayer (in unison) Adapted from Jane Grayshon, Midwife and writer, afflicted with chronic pain for 30 years
May we long not for the smoothness of sand which looks good, and feels flat, and is easy to walk on but will not withstand a storm. May we build our hopes on you. Though you may not prevent the storms, you keep us firm within them.
So even if we’re battered, we cannot fall except deeper into a crevice in the rock; deeper into you. In the name of the One who is our Rock and Refuge we pray. Amen
*Hymn O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee # 357 in the Blue Hymnals
O Master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free; tell me thy secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care.
Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way.
Teach me thy patience, still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong.
In hope that sends a shining ray far down the future's broadening way, in peace that only thou canst give, with thee, O Master, let me live.
* CHARGE AND BLESSING Congregational Response: God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you, With a Shepherd’s care enfold you; God be with you till we meet again.
