Sarah Kirk skirk@grantham. ac. uk Sarah has been in the Beauty Industry now for 30 years and is as passionate now as the day she started. She has taken her career all over the world. Starting in a leading Health Spa Sarah followed her dream to work overseas which started with cruise ships, then being land based living in Bermuda, the Middle East and America. She is extremely knowledgeable about the industry and thrives on the students succeeding with passion to complete all level of courses to start their journey in the industry.
What to expect during your course! Here at Grantham College our Hair and Beauty salon is called R&R salons. At Riverside Retreat Salons we aim to offer a full personal consultation prior to any treatment, within a professional and relaxed environment. Products and aftercare will be discussed during your service to enable you to maintain your look at home. To complement our extensive choice of services, we sell a variety of retail products including L’Oréal, Eve Taylor skincare, OPI nail polishes, Tigi products from the Bed Head, Catwalk and S Factor ranges.
What treatments will you learn Depending on your course choice. We offer level 1 introduction to hair and beauty. Level 2 in Beauty Therapy Level 3 in beauty Therapy the general route Level 3 in beauty therapy massage route.
Level 1 Introduction to Beauty therapy The Level 1 diploma is an introduction to the hair and beauty sector and is designed to introduce a range of practical skills over a 1 -year programme. This qualification will give you an insight to basic manicure, pedicure, make up and facial treatments. To further your skills, you will also cover artistic and creative elements such as nail art, themed face painting and photographic makeup. To under pin this qualification, you will develop knowledge of health and safety, salon reception duties and working with others. Assessment will take place via written and practical assessment and an examination. On successful completion you can progress onto Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy.
Level 2 beauty therapy This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist including: facial skincare, enhancement of eyebrows and eyelashes, waxing services, manicure, pedicure, effectiveness at work, health and safety and promoting additional products and services to clients. This is a one year program in which you will complete a variety of assessments. Assessment will take place via written and practical assessment and an examination. On successful completion you can progress onto Level 3 Beauty Therapy.
Level 3 Beauty Therapy the General route. The primary outcome of the VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General is to confirm your competence in the job role of beauty therapist. All the units in this qualification relate directly to the specific job role of a beauty therapist. This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist including, mandatory units covering the following: facial and body electrical, body massage, electrical epilation, monitoring procedures in the salon and contributing to the planning of a promotional event. Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and client care. You will also develop a range of technical skills in preparing the skin, and applying beauty therapy products and electrical equipment to the skin, using a variety of different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.
Level 3 Beauty therapy the massage route This is a vocational qualification and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty massage therapist including, mandatory units covering the following: body massage, Indian head massage, and massage with pre-blended oils, stone therapy, monitoring procedures in the salon and contributing to the planning of a promotional event. Throughout this qualification you will develop your knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and client care. You will also develop a range of technical skills in massage, using a variety of different techniques. You will also develop interpersonal skills that will assist you to communicate effectively with clients.
Career opportunities Working in the Beauty industry has many career possibilities: Employed positions: Cruise ships, destination spas, high street salons Self-employed: Mobile, renting a space in a salon, owning your own salon.
Ragdale Hall Here at Grantham College we have a strong link to Ragdale hall. Ragdale Hall is based near Melton Mowbray so not very far from Grantham. The spa is an award-winning destination spa. We as a college work with ragdale for our students to complete work experience and apprenticeships.

Uniform and Kits All beauty students are to wear uniform at all times during lessons. We use La beeby to purchase our uniforms through. We have a special code that gives you discount on the uniform and a code for which one o purchase. https: //www. labeeby. co. uk/ All courses have there own kits that has all the equipment in that you will need for the duration of your course. We can email out kit letters for those that have not received them.
Code of Conduct It helps to give a professional impression to the public and other visitors. It help to give you pride in the way you look and to feel good about yourself. It helps to maintain Health, Safety and Hygiene within the salon.
The code of dress that you must abide by at all times in the workplace (college) is below: • A clean and ironed, navy blue therapist’s tunic top. You must wear your name badge. • A pair of clean full length, ironed navy blue trousers • A pair of clean black shoes, with a heel that is no more than 1 inch (2 ½ cms) in height. Your shoes must enclose the feet, for example, sandals are not permitted. • Plain Black socks only to be worn. • No coloured vests to be worn under your therapists’ tunic. • Black or navy cardigans only to be worn, no hoods • If you want to wear a watch, a fob watch is provided as part of your uniform. • Your hair if it is long must be tied back neatly before entering the salon for either practical or theory, with a black, brown or white hair band. Your hair must be clean. • Short hair must be tidy with no hanging fringes. • You must wear no jewellery other than a wedding band a single pair of stud earrings.
Code of Conduct Continued: Facial piercings are not permitted. No visible Dermal Piercings Tongue bars must be removed and replaced by a clear retainer. All visible tattoos must be covered with a plaster or camouflage make up for client sessions No false eyelashes or individual lashes to be worn to any lesson No visible Love Bites You must have a high standard of personal hygiene. You should wear a suitable deodorant and no heavily scented perfumes are permitted. You are required to wear make-up that is natural and enhancing. You should have a high standard of oral hygiene, which means regular brushing of your teeth and the use of breath freshener. Avoid the eating of highly scented foods such as garlic and onions. You are not permitted to chew gum.
Code of Conduct Continued Your hair must be of a natural colour i. e. no pink or blue Black or navy blue cardigans only to be worn, no hoods. Your hands must be kept clean at all times, Your nails must be kept short and clean, Your nails must be free from varnish, and must not have any false nail extensions or enhancements such as gel overlay You are only permitted to wait in the corridor 10 minutes before the start of the lesson and eating in the corridor is not permitted. No hot food can be consumed in the student locker rooms All belongings must be taken home at the end of the session, notes folders, text books, suit cases, coats. Only Portfolios stay on college site. All mobile phones to be stored in lockers. No bags, suit cases or coats in the salon Students are not allowed to use the water machine but can help themselves freely to tap water and hot drinks can be purchased from R&R Reception. Friends and Family can be your clients and will pay full price for treatments. You must also work on outside clients You must bring your Beauty Kits to every session
Activity We would like you to write a Pen Picture. Your Pen picture should be an Introduction to yourself and why you have chosen to do Beauty Therapy. We would also like you to include where you would see yourself in a 1 years time and then where you would see yourself in 5 years time. This can be completed and brought with you on the first day of college.

We understand that the current situation with Covid 19 may cause concern, but we would like to offer some reassurance. Covid 19 Our industry is at an advantage as under normal circumstances health and safety requirements and the prevention of cross infection is largely covered as part of our mandatory training. This includes consultation with our clients, wearing the correct personal protective equipment such as gloves and aprons. Frequent hand washing, before, during if necessary and after every client and the correct procedures for cleaning and sterilising our work areas, tools, and equipment after each client. This is not only essential to protect our clients but to protect us as therapists and hairdressers. We are following the government guidelines and will update our procedures according to any new practises that may be brought in such as, more detailed consultation before appointments, the continuous use of gloves, aprons and masks with disposal in accordance with the health and safety regulations, staggered appointment times, safe distances between chairs and couches along with any other requirements stipulated by government. Remote learning for September 2020 Throughout lockdown Grantham college have been delivering lessons through Microsoft teams this is a safe and secure way that Tutor can deliver remotely. In September some of the lessons will continue to be delivered remotely. For example direct study, English, math's and functional skills. To work remotely with teams you will need either laptop/computer, smartphone or tablet.
