Make sure you have your PE kit: you never know when we might have an impromptu PE session. Everything you need to know for the first day Ensure you have had a good night’s sleep. Don’t forget your book bag (no rucksacks allowed), empty pencil case, water bottle and lunch box. Remember your pencil case must not be fluffy.

Things you need to do ready for Year 6. Write a letter to us, your teachers, telling us all about yourselves. You might like to include your favourite colour, food, hobbies and any other pieces of information you believe we should know about yourselves. Try to learn some new vocabulary and use it in your writing. Practise your times tables. Look at the Year 5/6 spelling list and try and learn these spellings. We’ve included it in the next slide. Design a logo/Avatar depicting you.

Reading is vitally important and it is something we shall be focusing on every week. Reading One of our homework tasks is that you read to your parents at least twice a week and note down any words you are unfamiliar with or that you feel would be good to use in your writing. You might even like to note down a phrase which has grabbed your attention. We do ask your parents to sign in the reading record to celebrate any achievements or note down any concerns. We all know that reading everyday helps you develop a wider vocabulary, but it also helps you develop those all important comprehension skills which will be needed in Year 6.

Writing is a big focus in our curriculum. We will be using good quality authentic texts to ensure your writing has a purpose and an audience. These books will include modern novels, picture books and some of the classics: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, Rose Blanche by Roberto Innocenti, Goodnight Mr Tom by Majorie Magorian, Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo and Skellig by David Almond. We would really encourage you to read these books over the summer holidays to become familiar with them. You will need to ensure that you have an exceptional understanding of how to construct different sentences correctly and revise regularly the grammar terminology which we will be referring to throughout the year. Maths To ensure that you are successful in Maths this year, we ask that you really focus on learning your times tables and key number facts. This may be completed in different formats: Times Tables Rockstars, Hit the Button, writing them down at speed, card games and many other ways of practising. We will focus heavily on your arithmetic skills, securing your understanding and competency in the four basic operations which will give you the confidence to solve many problems.

Yes, we do give homework. There will be English, Maths, Spelling, Reading and sometimes we ask you to research topics. You will be given hand in dates and we ask that you endeavor to not leave your homework until the very last minute. Homework should be completed as neatly as you would produce work in class. Homework will be given at the beginning of the week with a focus every day. Homework should only take 20 minutes, so will not eat into your evenings. HOMEWORK
