This has been a remarkable year of growth for the American economy and workers. 1. 5 M 1. 5 Million Jobs Created Since January 2017 The unemployment rate is the lowest in 17 years at 4. 1 percent. 3% 4. 1% GDP grew at 3 percent for two consecutive quarters.
The Opportunity: Addressing the Skills Gap Challenge. Nearly 6. 1 million jobs are unfilled. 6. 1 8 Million 1 61% Trillion Total American student debt surpasses $1 trillion. Average college student debt $26, 000+. Of Employers 8 million workers lack necessary credentials. 61% of employers face challenges filling skilled worker vacancies.

Advanced Manufacturing / Engineering Ü Dow Chemical. Manufacturing and Engineering apprenticeship program involving the recruiting of Veterans. Information Technology Ü Microsoft – Application Developer Database Administrators and Systems Administrators Ü Amazon – Recruiting Veterans and training Cloud Support Associates. Task Force on Apprenticeship Expansion Meetings on November 13, 2017 and February 6, 2018 Chair – Secretary Alexander Acosta, U. S. Department of Labor Vice-Chair – Secretary Betsy De. Vos, U. S. Department of Education Vice-Chair – Secretary Wilbur Ross, U. S. Department of Commerce Task Force will submit a report with recommendations to the President addressing four areas: ü Federal initiatives to promote apprenticeships; ü Administrative and legislative reforms that would facilitate the formation and success of apprenticeship programs; ü The most effective strategies for creating industry-recognized apprenticeships; and ü The most effective strategies for amplifying and encouraging private-sector initiatives to promote apprenticeships

Youth Apprenticeship | Framework on Registered Apprenticeship for High School Students • Outlines the components of a high-quality RA program for high school students. • Provides recommendations on key elements of RA programs for high school students and at least 16 years old, enrolled in secondary schools. Over 17 states currently have youth apprenticeship programs or are working toward building programs. February 26 and 27, 2018: Apprenticeship study tour in Charleston, SC 8
PROJECT LEAD THE WAY (PLTW) PARTNERSHIP: STEM APPRENTICESHIPS PLTW is a national educational nonprofit that designs classroom instruction in STEM for delivery to more than 2. 4 million students across the country. Partnership with USDOL: • Develop a youth apprenticeship program in engineering, computer science, and biomedical science for high school students. • Students combine their PLTW classroom instruction with college curriculum and mentored on-the-job training. • MOU outlining roles and responsibilities National pilots: Trident Technical College in SC will pilot first apprenticeship in engineering in 2018 with Participating employers: Boeing, Robert Bosch, Charleston County, Mobile Communications and Thomas and Hutton 9
Increasing Diversity in Registered Apprenticeship Key Focus for OA To Expand Apprenticeship to Diverse Populations, we are working with: Minority Serving Institutions – --To obtain from Colleges and Universities their recommendations on attracting under-representative populations --To provide Related Technical Instruction --Establish the Institutions as Sponsors for programs HBCUs – Collaborating with DOL to form Consortiums with GA and Washington Metropolitan Area Schools HBCUs HSIs – Working with Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) Tribal- Member of the White House Native American Affairs’ Infrastructure & Economic Sub Committee -Connecting with American Indian Higher Education Consortium -Establishing Federal Apprenticeship Program with Indian Health Services Employers –connecting with Minority Businesses and Professional Organizations 10

Office of Disability Employment Policy Mission The Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) is the only non-regulatory federal agency that promotes policies and coordinates with employers and all levels of government to increase workplace success for people with disabilities. 16
