Trent Bridge Rotary Club in Argentina Rotary has a long tradition of hospitality between members in various countries. Here is our genial host at a barbecue near Mendoza when a group of us visited a few years ago with the Rotary Friendship Exchange Programme. We stayed with local Rotarians in their homes, became like family and were treated with real kindness. We had a rare opportunity to see something of this huge and fascinating country and learned many things, including the tango. Our hosts introduced us to local Rotary clubs and we made many friends. It is, of course an ‘exchange’ and the idea is eventually to entertain your hosts in your own country.

We take a party to the annual Kids Out event at Drayton Manor Park. It is a most rewarding day, often seeing a child who at the start is silent and uncommunicative suddenly come alive with excitement on a ride or in the zoo.
Trent Bridge Rotary Club – ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ High blood pressure is recognised as a common condition that can lead to serious illness, but is very often treatable. The first step is to be aware of the problem by means of a simple blood pressure check. Trent Bridge Rotary Club, along with Rotary Clubs across the UK, once again organised a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ day, which is held under the auspices of The Stroke Association in April each year. The Rotary Club provides the organisation and publicity, and The Stroke Association provides trained nurses to carry out the tests and all of the collateral and documentation to run the event. Thanks to the two nurses, who were on duty for five hours and the co-operation of Morrisons at Clifton, who provided a location for the tests, 132 Blood Pressure checks were made. As a result there were 17 recommendations for a routine follow-up by a GP within a month and another 9 for an urgent follow-up. This was another excellent example of the Trent Bridge Rotary Club partnering a national organisation to the benefit of the local community.
Trent Bridge Rotary Club & Nethergate School – Oh Yes It Is! We have arranged for 35 -40 children and staff from Clifton’s Nethergate School to attend the Relaxed Performance of the pantomime at the Nottingham Playhouse. In these performances the usual rules of sitting still and keeping quiet are suspended, creating a suitable atmosphere for pupils from special schools such as Nethergate. In 2017 it was Cinderella. The trip enables the pupils to have some light hearted entertainment in their difficult lives and provides the staff with an enjoyable outing Nethergate caters for pupils with learning difficulties and complex needs from across the City of Nottingham.

Trent Bridge Rotary Club – in Uganda A member of Trent Bridge RC heard from a visiting priest that his parish of Namyunyamna, 100 km from Kampala in Uganda, had a grave shortage of fresh water. The club undertook to raise the money for the construction of 6 boreholes with funds from the club and the local community in West Bridgford. These funds would then be used to generate grants from our local Rotary district and from Rotary Foundation, our international charity. The fund raising was so successful that we raised £ 43 k and this became £ 150 k with the grants. We were thus able to install 18 boreholes in three phases throughout the parish and provide some 100, 000 villagers with fresh water. The boreholes were installed in school sites but made available to all local residents. This area has seasonal rains but a long dry season. All water previously had to be fetched from streams and shallow wells that could be a mile or more from the school. It was hard work and the water was not always that hygienic. The boreholes have provided clean water for all and saved the village women much time and effort. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Iganga in Uganda.
