Curriculum We follow the Early Years framework and build on the progress your children

Curriculum We follow the Early Years framework and build on the progress your children made in nursery. In Reception we are getting the children ready for Year 1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Language and Communication and Physical Development (including handwriting) are the prime areas of learning and development. Literacy, Maths, Understanding of the World and Expressive Arts extend the children’s experiences. Phonics, P. E, Computing and R. E are also taught discreetly.

Topic We start each new topic by asking the children what they already know

Topic We start each new topic by asking the children what they already know and what they want to find out. We then focus our teaching on what the children are interested in and at the end of each topic we check we have answered our own questions. Our first topic is Ourselves.

Characteristics of Effective Learning There are three characteristics of learning these help us to focus on and understand how children learn. The characteristics of effective learning are: Playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’. Active learning - children keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy their achievements. Creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

Homework Every Friday we will send home a Weekly Workout, this should be completed

Homework Every Friday we will send home a Weekly Workout, this should be completed over the weekend and following week and returned to school the following Friday in your child’s red school bag. You could be asked to research something together, complete an activity or simply talk about something together. Your child will share these with their Key Person group on a Friday morning. Home Readers will be sent home in the red school bags. Children can change these on a Friday when they are returned to school in their red school bag. It is most important that you comment in the Reading Record book each time you read. We monitor this as we assess your child’s progress. We recommend your child reads at home at least three times a week. As we move through the school year, we will highlight targets in the record books, for you to focus on and comment on. Red school bags should be brought back into on FRIDAY’s.

Concerns If children have any worries, please encourage them to speak to an adult

Concerns If children have any worries, please encourage them to speak to an adult in school. Class teachers, key persons, lunchtime supervisors, key stage leaders, senior teachers and the head teacher are all here to listen and respond. If children share concerns about school work, playtime or any aspect of school with you, their parents, ask if they have spoken to someone in school and what has been done. Sometimes things have already been dealt with. If you need to speak to your child’s class teacher, please telephone school to arrange a telephone appointment.

Reminders We are constantly finding ways to keep children safe in schoolour new door

Reminders We are constantly finding ways to keep children safe in schoolour new door entry system is now in place. The main doors will be locked promptly after the children have safely come in. To ensure your child arrives safely to school please make sure they enter via the Reception garden gate and into the building at 9: 00 am. If for any reason you arrive late in the morning please accompany your child into the school grounds and see them safely inside the building before you leave. To keep our children safe at playtimes we have asked all children not to speak to anyone through the railings. Please help us to manage this by not approaching the railings to talk to children, even if it is your own child.

Reminders We have other rules within school to keep our children safe. We expect all children to follow these rules and show positive behaviour in school. We follow the good to be green behaviour system. We are a healthy school. We are trying to promote our school lunches by having taster sessions within class. All school dinners that we provide are free. If your child has a packed lunch please try to ensure that you are sending them with a healthy balanced lunch.
