Morning Procedures School begins this year at 7: 55. As students arrive, they will have some type of practice activity on their desks to complete. Ø They will unpack book bags and bring agenda, reading log, and behavior contract to me to check, and then begin: Copy Agenda Math Activity Cursive Handwriting Reading Activity 3 rd grade students are expected to take responsibility for their actions, their belongings, and their homework!

Blue Communication Folders will come home each night. Graded classwork, school communication, etc. Please

I check them every morning. Please help you child remember to take these out and put them back in their book bags every night.

Math begins at 8: 15. We begin with Number Talks and then move into the lesson. Guided Math Groups Daily Center Rotations – Math Facts, Games, Problem Solving, Acceleration Options Math Journal – Students will add to their math journals daily. It will be an explanation or visual of what we have completed in math class. Students will bring journals home each night to help with homework. Math homework daily. Pre and Post Tests on all units with continuous formative assessments. MULTIPLICATIOIN FACTS –MUST BE MASTERED IN 3 RD GRADE. BEGIN NOW!

Reading In Class – We have a large block of reading time. Begins with

Reading In Class – We have a large block of reading time. Begins with a CAFÉ strategy lesson. (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Extended Vocabulary) Teacher models strategies and students practice strategies. Teacher meets with all students’ weekly reading. Goal is to advance students levels. Students read independently – with a partner – listen to reading. They will be responsible for responding to reading and maintain a reading workbook

Reading Home Students will complete a reading log at home each night. They are

Reading Home Students will complete a reading log at home each night. They are required to read 20 minutes per night M-F, however they are encouraged to read more. The reading log should be completed each night and turned in every Monday to be checked. When a book (on the students’ level) is completed, please complete one of the Hooked on Books tickets and have student return to school. They will receive a bookmark to hang on the wall for every book read. Students should read a minimum of 5 books (on level) each nine week grading period.

Daily 5 Research based management program for small group instruction of reading. Many students are already familiar with this system from previous years. Students will do Word Work (Grammar and Spelling), Writing, and Reading as teacher works with guided reading groups. Students are accountable for completing all rotations.

Lucy Calkins Unit of Study School adopted this writing program last year Use by K-5 DAILY. Students will write every day in their writing notebook. Narrative – Informational - Opinion You will see improvement in your child’s writing.

Grammar/Cursive We are using mentor sentences this year to teach grammar. We will do

Grammar/Cursive We are using mentor sentences this year to teach grammar. We will do this daily in their Language Notebook. Students will begin with cursive next week. They are all pretty excited. You can help by working on this at home as well. They will not be required to use cursive in their classwork until possibly the last nine weeks.

Social Studies We will begin with Map Skills (2 Weeks) and then move on

Social Studies We will begin with Map Skills (2 Weeks) and then move on to our study of Greece. Our Social Studies Curriculum is not supported by our Social Studies book, so we will not be using them. We will be learning about famous individuals who have a made a contribution in U. S. History

Science We will begin with Rocks and Minerals and then on to Fossils. Our

Attendance Try to make appointments after 11: 15 Attendance – be sure to send a written note if your child is absent or tardy! Being at school on time is very important! Please be sure to read the Cobb County Attendance Policy. 3 Unexcused Absences = teacher makes contact 5 Unexcused Absences = letter from administration 7 Unexcused Absences = social worker referral Excessive absences, either excused or unexcused, can lead to a social worker referral also. Excessive tardies and early checkouts will also impact learning negatively.

Miscellaneous Media Center Check out begins August 17 th We have two parties each year – the week before winter break and the end of the year. Please feel free to send in a treat for you child’s birthday. You will need to bring it and serve it during our lunch. Every Friday is spirit day- wear your Mountain View Shirts. If your child needs medication, paperwork must be filled out through the clinic and the medication must remain there. Students may not have medication in their backpacks, and I cannot administer any medication unless instructed to do so by the school nurse.
