Homework • Students will have approximately 20 -30 minutes of homework per night Monday through Thursday. • Purpose: • Teach responsibility • Practice new skills • Assess understanding
Homework Policy • Missing homework is a zero unless turned in the following day. More than 3 zeros will affect report card grade. • Use of agenda • Full credit for completion; errors looked at for understanding.
English Language Arts • • Modules Writer’s Workshop Guided Reading Shared Reading Partners Read Aloud Silent Reading Word Study
Reading Logs • • Distributed on Fridays, to be handed in the following Friday. Begin with 60 minutes per week - weekly reading time will increase as the year progresses. Just reading for now – reader’s response questions starting after parent/teacher conferences. Reading on independent level, reading aloud to younger sibling, reading with parent all count!
Word Work • • • Spelling: 1 -week units • Students will be tested on all 15 “this week’s words” and 5 additional words from the bonus or mastery sections (20 words total) Vocabulary: 2 -week units • Students will need to study definitions, synonyms and antonyms Spelling and vocabulary units alternate
Math Curriculum • Numbers & Operations: understanding place value • Algebraic Thinking: problem solving with emphasis on multiplication and fractions. • Basic facts and fluency • Geometry: two-dimensional shapes • Measurement & Data: area and perimeter.
Math Modules • All lessons can be found on Engage NY website • Students will be asked to explain their reasoning • If your child is struggling, please note specific questions/concepts they are struggling with • Videos on class webpage
Social Studies & Science • The bulk of our Social Studies and Science curricula are taught through the ELA modules. • Map skills • Geography • Landforms • Geology • Buoyancy • Water Cycle • Life Cycles • Conservation
Field Trips • Outdoor Education: 3 walking field trips to Kaler’s Pond and Camp Paquatuck • WHBPAC – Rock the Presidents • Bronx Zoo – Late May
Parent Involvement • I am looking for a class parent volunteer. If you are interested, please see me later tonight! • Sign-up sheet for parties on back table. • Class Parties/Birthdays will take place for about 15 -20 minutes during snack time.
Other Information • Extra help will be available approximately once a week by invitation only (usually before school) • Book orders will go home several times a year (order online: Q 9 ZHJ) • Notes are required for absences and bus/transportation changes • Classwork and homework from absences should be returned in a timely manner
How Can I Help My Child? • Math facts to mastery: addition, subtraction, multiplication • Read, read! • Foster independence
• • Communication Conference day is November 8 th. Please choose a 15 -minute conference time before you leave this evening. Report cards will be issued 3 times per year. Phone calls, notes and emails for positive reasons as well as for any concerns.
