Historical Overview of the Induction Program Created by AB 1266 (Mazzoni, 1997), California's Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program grew out of legislation established in SB 1422 (Bergeson, 1992) and was based on research from the California New Teacher Project (CNTP). A central finding of this research identified the need to provide beginning teachers with focused induction support. To be useful, this support must be provided at a sufficient level of intensity to make a difference in the performance, retention, and satisfaction of beginning teachers. The 1997 Mazzoni legislation that established BTSA encouraged collaboration among local school districts to organize and deliver professional development for beginning teachers. The legislation led to a new requirement that teachers complete a two-year induction program of support and assessment during the first two years of teaching in order to earn a California Clear Teaching Credential.

Workshop Absence Policy Participation is mandatory for Induction Candidates. If you are unable to attend an SGVC event due to illness or an emergency situation, you must notify the Induction office immediately by phone or e-mail. In the case of a first absence Program Director will determine the best format by which to make up the work missed. In the case of subsequent absences, a meeting will be arranged to discuss the situation and the impact absences have on program completion (ICs) or program stipends (Mentors) in addition to the assignment of make- up work.

Logs are to be kept as records of weekly meeting activities between ICs and Mentors. It is the responsibility of the Mentor to maintain and submit the log to the Program Director at designated intervals. The date, duration, and general subject matter of the meeting should be recorded in the log. The IC will review and initial logs before submission. IC and Mentors may choose to work on logs in a mutual fashion. However, this must be a mutual decision and a brief note indicating such must accompany the first log submission.
