Location • The Philippines is a country located in the southeastern part of the continent of Asia. • This country is made up of 80 provinces, similar to states. • This country is more formally known as the Republic of the Philippines. • The capital city of the Philippines is Manila.
Geography • This country consists of more than 7, 000 islands. These islands are spread out over a very large area, but if they were placed together, they are only about the size of the country of Ecuador or the state of Arizona. • In this country, most people live on one of 11 main islands. • The Philippines is located between the countries of Taiwan and Borneo and is about 500 miles away from the Asian mainland. • Many mountains here are covered by mountains and volcanoes. • About one-fourth of the country is covered by forested areas. • Most of the islands of the country have many streams and sandy beaches and commonly have earthquakes.

Money • The currency of the Philippines is the Philippine peso. • Important crops: rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane • Important industries: farming, factories, call centers • Many Filipinos leave their country to work in other countries to be able to make more money. They then may send the extra money home to help support their families.
Schools • Children in the Philippines typically begin school when they are 6 or 7 years old. • Children attend 6 years of elementary school. The most students continue on for 4 more years of high school, which includes 1 year of military training. • In this country, classes tend to be very large, with 40 -60 students in one class! • In the countryside, children may have to walk several miles to get to school, and may even have to bring their own stools to sit on since the school may not have enough money to provide seats. • Education is very important to Filipinos.
Climate • In the Philippines the weather is tropical, meaning it is usually hot and humid. • The rainy season typically lasts from June to October each year. • The Philippines is in a typhoon belt. This means that a hurricane could happen at any time.

HKow There about 70 different languages spoken throughout the country. The Philippines has one of the largest English-speaking populations of any country in the world, partially due to the fact that the United States ruled the country for 48 years. English is widely used in schools, businesses, and government. In some areas, spoken English includes many Tagalog words in casual conversation. This way of speaking is called Taglish.
