First a couple of words, the Kipawa is being threatened by Hydro Quebec’s Tabaret project. This project would divert most of the Kipawa’s water through a new outlet and down 90 m into Lac Temiscamingue … by passing the Kipawa River. Every year Esprit rafting and Les Amis take locals, tourists, Hydro Quebec people, municipal representatives down the river in raft. Jose Mediavilla, one of the first “modern” people to have run the Kipawa (photo taken in 1998) Read more about the Kipawa in Scott’s book – The Kipawa River Chronicles (www. amazon. com) Portage Right The first “rapid” is no more. Button hook is one of the more spectacular rapids … Now there is a small bridge built over the “broken bridge” rapid, but it still isn’t a spot to be missed (at the right level). Since putting on about 3 hours ago you’ve only passed one house (where the river loops up near the main road) and this bridge. Broken Bridge access road Hwy. 101 Portage Right

Hollywood at low levels becomes an entirely different run. There is nothing like a satisfying day on the Kipawa and then paddling out into Lac Temiscamingue and pulling up at the Sorensen’s knowing you are home.
