You will use the following links to complete your Summer Bridge Defined Learning STEM coursework. This is for incoming 9 th graders into STEM Engineering pathway. Even if you may not be at the campus next year, you are required to complete the assignment. I will have office hours each day June 1 -4, simply send me a message in Canvas and I will either respond or if you want to have a face-to face Zoom, please let me know. Read the first file, Underwater Task Assignment. Then decide which of the two articles you will need. You can simply use a Word doc or if you would like you can print off the pdf for an actual Engineering Journal and then do all of your work in it , take pictures and submit them on a word doc. Use the rubric to ensure you do your best work. You will need to be able to take pictures using ipad or phone and add them to your Word doc submission. Please contact me if you have any questions. Project Description 6/1/20 People around the world want to resume their normal behaviors. That means flying, commuting, factory production, etc. As a species we have relied heavily on the use of fossil fuels to power our normal behaviors. Many people have differing opinions on the issue of climate change, but the scientific consensus is that human behavior is the leading cause, and that is because we burn fossil fuels for most of our energy needs, which release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Our normal behaviors as humans have led to depletion of marine life, acid rain, pollution of rivers and lakes, the driving of species to extinction, and global warming. Data shows that as humans slow down, nature returns to its normal state. The air becomes cleaner and plants and animals return to their native environments. Our normal state is nature’s abnormal state. Our current behavior as a species is unsustainable. That is why it is imperative to many people around the world that we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while also maintaining our vast energy needs. Scientists and engineers have been searching for the best ways to produce energy cleanly. This has led to many options, but perhaps the most controversial one is the use of nuclear energy. The project on which you will work today is Nuclear Energy Scientist on Defined Learning. In the project, you will conduct research on how nuclear energy is used to generate electricity and formulate an opinion on your support for or against the use of nuclear energy. You will complete two products. On one product you will use your scientific knowledge of nuclear power to explain how the process works. In the other product, you will present your argument for or against nuclear power usage. • You can complete the project in a group of up to 3 members. Use the link here to record your name on the group sign up sheet. ◦ Nuclear Energy Scientist Project Signup Sheet (Links to an external site. ) ◦ • • • If you are working in a group, put your name along with your group members under the header “We will work together”. If you are working by yourself, put your name under the header “I will work alone”. ◦ Please do not move or edit anyone else’s name without their permission. You can be as creative as you like in your products. In the creation of your products, you can use your computer/i. Pad or do it by hand. If you do anything by hand, take a picture or video of your work and upload it. Each product has a rubric. You can view these to ensure that you have all of the necessary requirements. Note on using Defined Learning: • Use this link to go to the site: ◦ Defined Learning Site (Links to an external site. ) ◦ Login by using the option: “Log in with Clever” • I will have virtual hours today 9: 30 am – 11: 30 am and 1: 00 pm – 3: 00 pm. ◦ https: //zoom. us/j/5015239249 ◦ Meeting ID: 501 523 9249 ◦ Password: GPCI Assignment • Subjective Product (Click to go to assignment) ◦ Either Multimedia Presentation or Newspaper Article • Objective Product (Click to go to assignment) ◦ Either Scientific Poster or Technical Report

Good job! Since you completed today’s work, I’ll let you have this jet pack mechanism I built today. It still needs some boosters and fuel, but we can get them later this week. Come back tomorrow and we’ll work some more.
