Academic Excellence How Would You Assess Academic Excellence in the Corps? 4
Academic Excellence How Do We Measure Academic Excellence? Some Academic Officer In Charge Comments …The 4 th class were working on EN 102 and history. The yearlings were studying hard for economics, and both the cows and firsties were studying as well in the rooms I checked. The study room was being used for a group study session on Arabic. Overall, the company was working and well focused on academic requirements. Study conditions were excellent. Again, the study room, although not being used, was set up and looked conducive to studying. This Company also had a very good Academic board with all of the Company tutors listed with their respective subjects. I also stopped by a Plebe room and Yearling room while in the Company. All Cadets in the rooms were hard at work on their respective assignments. 5
Academic Excellence This was clearly a high workload week for the cadets, and I noted that every company seemed focused on academic success…every class was working and uninterrupted by outside distractions. I saw many situations where it appeared the Evening Study Period was being encroached on…Specific examples: I found two cadets picking up litter outside. They said they had been put on "Battalion Police Call. " 15 min of trash removal is authorized for plebes during ESP, but this was not a 15 -minute job. Another cadet said his company was told to clean their rooms during ESP and had a WPR the following morning. 6
Academic Excellence Grades Are Not the Only Way to Assess Academic Excellence For individuals and for cadet companies. 7
Academic Excellence Where the AE Committee Has Been • Established a faculty counterpart to the BAO to mentor and assist in developing and supervising policies pertaining to AE – Vice Dean for Education and the AE Committee Chair • Investigated how the current company academic awards system supports AE for cadets – Determined their effectiveness in promoting/motivating AE – Determined (and shared) the best practices of cadet companies that demonstrate AE – Made recommendations for improvement which we are building on this year 8
Academic Excellence Prior Cadet Company Academic Awards (Performance oriented) • Superintendant’s Award – Annual - during grad week – Company in each regiment with best overall score: 33% academic, 34% military, and 33% physical • Dean’s Gold Star – Term – Streamer awarded to company in each regiment with highest Academic Program Score (APS) • Dean’s Silver Star – Term – Streamer awarded to all companies with APS > 3. 0 9
Academic Excellence Current Company Academic Awards Effectiveness • Do not provide much incentive for cadets – Process of award determination unknown or not understood by all – Streamer given – Timing of presentation to award winners – Dean’s Silver Star is awarded to approximately ½ of the companies – Focused on grades 10
Academic Excellence Improving the Company Academic Achievement Awards • Gold Star to one company per regiment: − Continues to be based on performance − Proposed formula: (# CDTs on dean’s list) + 1. 5(# Distinguished CDTs) - 3(# CDTs with failing grade(s) • Silver Star (proposed) awarded to the company in each regiment with the best academic support program IAW new criteria o Regimental Academic Officers assess 11
Academic Excellence Dean’s Silver Star Best Academic Support Program Companies may not have the highest APSs in their regiment but they have instituted programs (like tutoring programs) and conditions (like study rooms) to inspire academic excellence that go above and beyond the other companies’ programs and initiatives. • Comprehensive company level incentives program for those seeking and achieving AE • Study room that is conducive to learning • Developed and implemented tutor program • Remediation • Measures in place to safeguard ESP • Bonus / Penalty Opportunities 12

Academic Excellence And How About the Library! The Library was very impressive - much more conducive to study than the old Library. The number of Cadets working throughout was good to see especially on a Thursday night. It seemed like all of the rooms were being utilized for group study. Additionally, I found the Cadets were using all of the capabilities of the rooms to their advantage. If I had access to this kind of facility as a Cadet, I may have done better academically. Jefferson Hall was absolutely packed with cadets. Clearly, the library is very popular with cadets as a study area. There were, literally, only a few empty seats in the house… All the small group rooms were in use, with many cadets making use of the multimedia facilities to enhance their work. Cadets were using the wireless and coffee bar facilities, and really seemed to like the environment. 26
