Trap Jaw Ant Odontomachus bauri are commonly known as trap jaw ants. They have a very big pair of mandibles capable of opening 180 degrees. The ants open the mandibles as far as possible which are then locked into position with some internal mechanism. The energy is stored in a group of thick muscles. This energy is released in a powerful explosion by the stimulation of some sensory hairs. The trap jaw ants O. bauri close their mandibles faster than any other body part of any other predator in the animal world. A study done in California on this species registered speeds between 126 to 230 km per hour, with the mandibles closing in 130 micro seconds. GO.
